A Contemporary Tribute to Antigua's Religious Heritage
The ancient city of Antigua in Guatemala is known for its saints. Patron saint James, or Santiago, watches over the city, and countless others are celebrated in its many churches. This elegant villa is named Entre Santos ("among the saints") in tribute to them, and it's a dedication that you feel immediately upon entering.
A celebration of the culture of Guatemala that combines traditional, local elements with contemporary design, it features religious iconography in the forms of photographs, paintings, and sculpture throughout its rooms. The house has four elegantly appointed bedrooms, with high ceilings, polished stone floors and generous windows, but it's the outdoor space that we fell for. The open courtyard contains a pool, jacuzzi and firepit, and is overlooked by a striking panorama deck.
This villa for rent in Guatemala is located in Antigua's quietest neighborhood, just a short tuk tuk ride from the bustling center, and within sight of one of the region's volcanoes. It's still active, so grab a coffee or a glass of wine, sit for a while on the deck, and enjoy the show!
This recently remodeled villa for rent in Guatemala has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, with a pool, Jacuzzi and generous outdoor space.
AROUND
The UNESCO World Heritage City of Antigua sits under the watch of patron saint Santiago, as well as three volcanoes. With its pastel colored colonial-style buildings and countless churches, it's a vibrant and popular destination for tourists. Locals gather around the fountain at Parque Central, at the central semi-ruined Catedral de Santiago, and at the Igelsia y Convento de Santo Domingo, which was founded by Dominican friars in 1542.
To truly understand the relationship this city has with its saints, arrive in time for Holy Week (Semana Santa) and Easter (Pascua), which feature elaborate processions through the streets. Sample traditional Guatemalan dishes (handmade tortillas, refried beans, fried plantain, and more) at its many restaurants, and don't forget to try the handmade chocolate, for which Antigua is famous.
Local destinations worth visiting include Monterrico Beach, Lake Atitlan, Coban, Lanquín (Semuc Champey), and the ancient ruined city of Tikal.
