An Architectural Escape by the Beach in Baja
Award-winning Canadian architect Javier Campos created this vivid, geometric, four-bedroom villa in the Baja California community of San Jose del Cabo, landing on the cover of Azure design magazine. The eye-catching residence rises from its gated, manicured lot minutes from the beach, a turquoise, saltwater lap pool and jacuzzi flanking its open-air living room and each of its spare, sensual bedrooms featuring an en-suite bathroom.
A Baja Retreat by Architect Javier Campos as Seen on the Cover of Azure Magazine
With its flex room for yoga, meditation or massage, its curated library of creativity-focused titles, dedicated concierge, and its leafy, outdoor sky showers open to the Baja skies, this architectural residence takes contemporary, coastal living up a notch. And its sharp white volumes by Vancouver architect Javier Campos make a striking architectural statement.
Across its 5,700 square feet of combined indoor/outdoor living space, the home strikes a harmonious balance between casual, alfresco living and peaceful, private spaces. Bedrooms offer private entrances and are set apart from the common spaces, and the house is equipped with fiber optic internet and smart home elements, making it a luxe, remote workstation near the beach.
Dramatic white walls stair step across the minimalist lot, accented by landscaping, built-in concrete elements, and outdoor lounging and dining zones. Loungers and bench sofas greet you around the pool, an outdoor bathtub in polished concrete lets you soak under the stars, and there’s a barbecue area adjacent to the covered dining patio.
The home’s pillows, throws and baskets are from the available-for-purchase Oaxaca Collection, created by artisans in the region of Oaxaca, with additional eco-conscious throw pillows available for purchase in leather, wool, and cotton.
Photo shoots
The space is a favorite of photo shoots, with its dedicated parking spaces, desert chic vibe and bright white walled backdrop. Commercial photoshoots of up to 20 people and 8 vehicles are welcome. Fiber optic speed of 150-200mbps down and 75-150mbps up allows for large image transfer.
Around
Located in San Jose del Cabo, the house is within five minutes of groceries, stores, coffee shops and restaurants. The Costa Azul surf beaches are a five-minute walk from the home. Costa Azul is home to Cabo’s surf scene, a mecca for those who want food and drink options along with beautiful waves. The surf break north of the arroyo is known as Zippers (hence, the name of the seaside restaurant/hangout), and is an expert-level, right-hand reef break. Two other breaks—Middle and La Roca—also draw beginner and intermediate surfers, and another break to the south, called Old Man’s, is good for long boarders. The beach is also great for walking, and there’s plenty of swimming and snorkeling, too, when the surf is calm. Guides and outfitters offer surf fishing tours and horseback riding adventures on the sands, and surfboard and snorkel rentals and instruction options are available.
San Jose del Cabo's center is a quick drive from the home. It's a bright resort city known for its colonial architecture and cobbled historic district in addition to its beaches. An artistic mecca, the town’s colorful gallery district is a destination, home to weekly art walks and open-air exhibitions, in addition to dozens of internationally-known galleries and collections. San Jose's cobblestone streets are also lined with local seafood stands, taquerias and higher end, farm-to-table dining outposts inspired by the local ingredients. There’s a food walk each week, too, an experience created to highlight regional producers and the diverse food and drink scene. Add to it live music and folk dancing, and it’s an authentic Baja fiesta.
