Around
Located in a tranquil tropical location a seven-minute walk to the beach and a four-minute cab ride to the action in La Punta, this property offers ocean panoramas and easy access to all Puerto Escondido has to offer. Lively La Punta is a favorite spot of surfers, a hip beach community of cafes, street food stands, restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Further north along the coast is Playa Zicatela, a beach with calmer swimming waters less than 10 minutes from the villas on foot. After Zicatela, the coastline continues with beaches including Playa Principal, Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Coral and Playa Bacocho, each with spots for swimming, water sports, eating and drinking, with Playa Carrizalillo the favorite sands for sunning and swimming. Area attractions include sea turtle releases, boat tours to view the bioluminescence, dolphin watching, horseback riding, and a host of wellness activities from Temazcals and sound baths to yoga sessions, massage and meditation.
Oaxaca, the nearby capital city of the region, is a vibrant city that offers a celebration of indigenous culture and is home to mezcal, the smoky, ancestral sister spirit to tequila, and to rich, dark molés, both making it one of the most popular culinary destinations in the world right now. Iconic architecture meets diverse, pre-Colombian culture and a buzzing, contemporary nightlife, and the city melds indigenous, Spanish colonial and modern Mexican influences in its foods, arts, culture, textiles, and handcrafts. The city is also great for adventure types, who can roam the Sierra Madre Sur mountains and valleys and discover local villages with distinct traditions and handicrafts (rug weavers in Teotitlan, clay ceramic potters in San Marcos Tlapazola, alebrije makers in San Martin Tilcajete).
Day hikes are crossed by waterfalls, and dozens of trails wind through verdant valleys or to overlooks (San Felipe del Agua) that are perfect spots for sunset watching. Mountain bikers consider the area one of Mexico’s best, and the city is home to paths of varying levels. Ancient ruins can be found outside the city limits. There’s a famous 2,000-year-old tree named El Tule outside of town. And Oaxaca’s pedestrian friendly Centro Historico is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its stunning architecture.
