Harmonious Architectural Renovation for Eight in the Marche

A beautiful country refuge, where modern environmentally focused design merges harmoniously with old-school craftsmanship, this 200-square-meter, three-level retreat in the rolling hills of Italy’s scenic Marche region sleeps eight guests in four queen bedrooms. It offers incomparable rural views from its rooms, terraces and dining pergola, a garden scented with lavender and rosemary highlighted by a 13m x 5m saltwater pool, an open-plan kitchen with a farm table, and the beaches of the Adriatic Sea a quick drive away.

Renovated in 2021 by architect Markus Hintermeier and Imke Brueren with a focus on retaining tradition and adding complementary sustainable updates, the house’s interiors are modern, natural and bright, with old stone walls and exposed bricks creating a charmed backdrop. The upstairs suites, each with a private bathroom, have been given names. The Jacopo Suite is a study in greys, whites and clean modern lines under exposed beams, with earth-toned tiles in the walk-in shower. The Nicola Suite adopts a softer, more dressed-up feminine look, a space of warm hues and classic antiques. The Helia Suite feels loft like and bright, under raw timbers, with picture book views. The Cézanne is the home’s primary bedroom, under a timbered pitched ceiling, on beautiful stone floors, with an oversized soaking tub.

Located between mountains and sea, in a region of rolling rural hills and storybook historic villages, the house makes a great base for those wanting active holidays. The sparkling beaches of the Adriatic Sea are only a 15-minute drive away, while the Monti Sibillini mountains are ideal for hiking, cycling and trekking—even skiing in the winter months. The nearest village, Petritoli, is just three kilometers from the house, offering a weekly market as well as family-run grocery stores, restaurants and wine bars. The nearby towns of Fermo, Urbino (with its Renaissance architecture), and Ascoli Piceno (its winding streets clinging to a cliff) are definitely worth a visit.

The Marche is a culinary tourist’s dream destination, known for its prized truffle dishes, wild mushrooms, regional olive oils and its fresh seafood—thanks to the abundance of its setting between mountain and sea. There are dozens of recommended restaurants and market days as well as local butchers, organic growers’ outlets, and bakers. Artisanal traditions still thrive in the region, land of ceramicists and textile and leather workers, and a wealth of generational agricultural producers offer products from wine to olive oil. Those seeking the Adriatic waters should hit the beach in at La Baia Beach Club, Ponte Nina Nomad Beach Club, and Porta San Giorgio, each well under a half hour’s drive. Skiers and snowsports enthusiasts can hit the Apennine mountain slopes in winter.
