A Minimalist Retreat in Melides
Set within a pine forest overlooking the Alentejo coast, this contemporary home is an off-grid sanctuary born from a five-year passion project. The architecture and "undesigned" interior design by Mariaana de Mascarenhas of AW-MC focus on the earthy materials of the Alentejo land.
Built to be self-sufficient with solar power and its own borehole, the home encourages a slow, restorative pace. It features a saltwater pool, dedicated wellness spaces, and interiors defined by pieces from local Portuguese artisans, including terracotta kitchen pendants handmade by Pareidolia Design in her studio in Lisbon. This is a place designed for reconnection, whether for family stays or curated retreats.
Two best friends envisioned a space for healing, and the result is a home that feels deeply connected to its landscape. The design by AW-MC honors Alentejo’s vernacular building traditions while embracing a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The interiors follow an "undesigned" philosophy, where raw concrete, warm woods, and natural textiles take center stage. Furnishings celebrate local craftsmanship, with nearly every piece sourced from Portuguese artisans who leave their fingerprints on the work.
The outdoor areas are designed for wellness and immersion in nature. A saltwater pool provides the focal point, surrounded by terraces with views towards the ocean. A dedicated yoga deck sits in the forest, complemented by a sauna, an ice bath, and a yurt for meditation or treatments. A fruit and vegetable garden, alongside a fragrant sensory garden, completes this restorative outdoor environment.
