Terra Illuminada
A vibrant re-envisioning of a 1950s suburban bungalow, this oasis is new wave tropical—a bungalow stripped down to its original bones—reimagined as a serene haven of curving, Zen-inspired spaces flooded with light, and reconstructed as a place of sensuous curves, ever-changing shadows, and graceful arches.
Inspired by its location in an oasis of extraordinary greenery, this small home was recreated to inspire peace and tranquility. A deep exhale, the space is a study of soft structural curves cloaked in organic materials inside a minimalist, rustic-tropical cabana. The garden sanctuary features matte plaster surfaces, Mediterranean-inspired terracotta tiling, and hideaway-in-the-tropics views out every window. Those views take in a vast, tree- and flower-packed garden that's lush with bamboo, palms, and a majestic blooming cactus that sprouts hundreds of flowers annually. The garden is shared with the small guesthouse next door.
AROUND
An urban oasis in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, the home feels like a tropical hideaway though it's only five minutes from the airport and two miles from the city’s famed Las Olas Boulevard. Fort Lauderdale’s beaches are world-class and all easy drives from the house. Pompano Beach feels remote and is the favorite launch for snorkelers and scuba divers who can access coral reefs immediately offshore. Slightly outside of town, Hillsboro Beach has a historic lighthouse and is a sea turtle nesting ground, while Deerfield Beach boasts a huge international fishing pier and a live underwater camera feed. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a haunt for lovers of mid-century modern, lined by low-slung architecture and offering a shipwreck snorkeling trail. Las Olas Beach is Fort Lauderdale’s fave, a right-in-the-city sand and beachfront promenade with glitzy boutiques and destination restaurants, plus yacht and paddleboard tour guides. Another in-town boardwalk can be found on Hollywood Beach, a lower key, family- and pet-friendly, café-lined stretch in town. Known as the “Venice of America” for its canals that make up the IntraCoastal Waterway, Fort Lauderdale’s feat of engineering stretches 3,000 miles between the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, with 300 miles of inland canals that wind through the urban landscape and the Everglades ecosystem.
