An 18th-Century Manor in Saint Émilion Wine Country
Named for its vintage year like the fine wine grapes of the region, this 1906 manor rises elegantly from the Saint Émilion vineyards of Bordeaux, a grand cru classé in its own right, with refined interiors that tastefully blend ancient furnishings with modern comforts, and an on-site antiques boutique to explore, all only 10 minutes on foot to Saint Émilion village.
A Wine Country Residence in France’s Prestigious Saint Émilion Wine Region
Saint Émilion’s notable crus need no introduction to wine aficionados, and this noble early-18th-century manor fits right in, in this celebrated slice of Bordeaux’s wine country. Dating from 1906, the honed blonde stone and tile-roofed residence offers two rooms, two suites, and an apartment, each showcasing that effortless, leisurely-meets-luxurious style that's characteristic of wine-country mansions. All rooms feature Nespresso stations, flat screen TVs, desk spaces, AC, plus curated bath products. There is a swimming pool in the gardens.
Madeline Named for the property’s original name and its winery, Clos de la Madeline, this 26-square-meter room for two (king bed) is on the ground floor, with oak floors, a Louis XV marble-topped writing desk, photographic art, and an en-suite bathroom with double sinks and a shower.
Magnan Also named for a wine produced on-site in the past, Château Magan La Gaffilière, this 30-square-meter, king room is upstairs under an angling, exposed timber ceiling. It features original wood floors, an artfully tiled bath with shower and double sinks, and a 19th-century Spanish inlaid console.
St. Émilion Suite This second-story, 35-square-meter suite features 19th-century interior décor, with a period hearth, desk/library, and a Chinese-inspired Napolean III table. Photos of vineyards hang on the walls, and the suite’s large bathroom has a tub and shower, with views of the garden and the carrier pigeon tower.
Clos 1906 Suite A warmly appointed, second-story, 35-square-meter suite with views of the vineyards and surrounding countryside, this suite’s décor dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring an original 19th-century hearth topped by an Art Deco mirror, with an 18th-century armoire. Its bath has both a tub and shower, and there’s a sofa bed in the suite’s living area.
La Gaffilière Apartment A 100-square-meter guest house annexed to the manor, this spacious three-story apartment features a living room and open kitchen on its ground floor, a super king suite (with tub and shower) upstairs, and another bedroom with two twins on the top floor. It offers garden and pool access.
Additional features
The manor’s owners are passionate about interior design, antiques, and vintage pieces, and they operate an antiques and vintage leather shop on site. They can assist with the organization of private winery tours and tastings, guided visits to historical sites, coordination of transport, recommendations for walking tours of the area, and bike rentals.
The entire manor is also available for event rental.
Around
Set in the region’s prestigious vineyards and a 10-minute walk to the medieval village of Saint Émilion, the property offers wine country leisure all around. One of France’s preeminent wine towns, Saint Émilion is a UNESCO World Heritage village, located at the heart of Bordeaux wine country. Named for an 8th-century monk who, legend has it, lived hermit-like in a local cave and performed miracles that resulted in his sainthood, the town is crafted of blonde, locally quarried stone, its underground rockscape cut through with miles of tunneled galleries.
The region’s wines are famous, of course, exceptional in great part because of this unique geology or terroir, and a microclimate in the Gironde region just off the Atlantic. This is world-renowned wine country, and tourism in the area centers around tastings and tours. Cycling is a popular way to get around to various vineyards, and there is no shortage of guided tour options throughout the region. The manor is also reasonably close to the beautiful city of Bordeaux, one of France’s architectural and cultural capitals standing majestically on the Garonne River, reachable by car in under an hour. Known for its stately 18th- and 19th-century mansions and abundance of public gardens, Bordeaux offers boutique shopping, notable museums, an exceptional food scene and, of course, a wealth of wine making culture and tradition.
