Scandinavian Soul in Ancient Salento
Designed by Maj-La Pizzelli in collaboration with architect Lucia Cataldi, this residence began as a quest to preserve the "slow" architecture of southern Italy. Pizzelli and Cataldi focused on a neutral palette, allowing the shadow-play of the star vaults and the tactile nature of the terrazzo to lead. It is a residence that prioritizes structural integrity over artifice, reflecting a distinct "Sandals in the City" philosophy.
Furniture pieces from Scandinavian and Italian masters sit on polished floors, creating a tactile experience that invites bare feet. Natural linen textiles and bespoke cabinetry soften the limestone's geometry. Every room serves as a gallery for the owner's refined aesthetic, emphasizing craftsmanship over clutter.
The walled Mediterranean garden is a private ecosystem of citrus trees and aromatic herbs. A pool serves as the centerpiece, flanked by sun-bleached terraces. The alfresco dining area is positioned to capture evening breezes, providing a secluded environment for social gatherings under the Apulian sky.
What we love
We love the beautiful tension here between those massive, ancient stone vaults and the sharp, disciplined "Scandi" restraint that Maj-La Pizzelli does so well. You really feel it in the bathrooms, where the raw, textured walls are treated like art, or in the way the vintage furniture pieces sit just right against those incredible patterned floor tiles. It’s a space that’s been edited down to the essentials. Our favorite relaxation after a day exploring the area is to retreat to the walled garden with a sundowner to soak up that slow, rhythmic Southern Italian energy.
