Boat Access Only
On the farthest end of a Dutch peninsula sits a handcrafted cabin accessible by boat, the project of friends and business partners who built the structure as a designer getaway with an intimate glamping feeling to it. Built entirely of wood, with a focus on minimalizing the structure’s environmental impact, Eilandseind (or Island End) is shake-shingled and yurt-shaped, surrounded by water that laps against the wood jetties built to surround it.
A yurt-inspired wooden cabin hand-built by friends to enjoy the teeming natural beauty found at the end of a peninsula, this circular cabin and its annex are situated in a rugged peat garden. The space was entirely hand hewn and includes sleep spots for four, as well as a bathroom, kitchen with cooktop and eat-in dining table, and a cozy living area with a wood pellet stove.
The communal living space in this cabin for rent in the Netherlands fills the circular, wood paneled room. There’s a simple, artisanal, or maker quality to the furnishings, and windows and glass doors encircle the open-plan room offering views onto the wildlife out the windows. Two queen bedrooms are built into an annex that also houses a shared modern bathroom with a shower.
Outdoors, wrap-around decks and jetties hold a barbecue area and pizza oven, plus alfresco living and dining areas. There’s an electric motorboat and canoe for exploring the maze of waterways surrounding the property, a ladder into the water for swimming access, a trampoline, hammock and loungers for making the most of your downtime spent plunged into this natural setting.
This home is available in fixed blocks of "long weekends" (3 nights from Friday to Sunday, inclusive) and "mid-weeks" (4 nights from Monday to Thursday). Changeover days are Mondays and Fridays. Please inquire.
AROUND
Located north of the city of Utrecht in a biodiverse area known as Natura 2000, the cabin’s surroundings—animals, plant life, and the wetlands—are government protected. The cabin is accessible only by boat (parking is available at the boat access site). The cabin sits in a peat garden that was part of a unique waterway defense system for the Dutch in the 16th century and is slated for UNESCO World Heritage status. Many of the fortresses of the historic defense are open for tourism.
But the best part of this cabin for rent in the Netherlands is its isolation in nature. The area feels uniquely remote and unspoiled despite its accessibility to Utrecht and Amsterdam. Bird life is abundant. Rare tree and plant species fill the reserve, and the best way to get around and explore the beautifully diverse maze of waterways is by boat. When being still and taking it all in isn’t enough, cycling paths are numerous nearby, sailing is available on the Loosdrechtse lakes, and there are hiking trails within the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
