Restored Andalucían Finca with Chapel and Alhambra Garden in Frigiliana

Finca Santa Maria is a private estate of 14 acres (about 5.7 hectares) in the hills above Frigiliana, made up of two houses with six bedrooms and room for 12 guests. The houses book together, which suits a family reunion, a group of friends, or a small wedding, and the owners also host retreats here built around yoga, art workshops and hiking.

A week here moves between the estate and the world that surrounds it. Frigiliana's whitewashed lanes are close, while the Alhambra can be a day trip, and a boat trip from the coast another. On the days in between, you stay put for breakfast under the trees, a long lunch at one of the three dining areas, an afternoon by the pool, and evenings at the outdoor kitchen with the barbecue going and a lounge that seats all 12 of you. A private chef can do the cooking, yoga and pilates instructors can be arranged, and hikers can head straight into the mountains from the property.

The finca belongs to a Norwegian family who first came to Andalucía as visitors more than 30 years ago. When they found Parrilla, the houses needed complete renovation and the gardens had gone wild. They spent many years restoring and rebuilding, with natural materials and local craft, and the result includes fountains, terraces, a vineyard, olive and fruit trees, and the Alhambra Garden, which they modeled on the historic gardens of Granada. A small private chapel is part of the property.

Each house has a living room with a fireplace and a kitchen. Outside, the pool, a yoga and meditation area and table tennis sit among the terraces, and from the garden you can see the sea.

Frigiliana's lanes are the first places to explore on foot, and Nerja's beaches are a short drive down the hill. Málaga is 50 kilometers away, boat trips leave from the Mediterranean coast, and Granada is a full day out. The mountains behind the finca are walking country, and the host can arrange local guides for the longer routes.
