An Architect-Designed Wellness House Above the Douro
Fugahouse takes its name from the Portuguese word for escape, and it lives up to it. The architect Diogo Aguiar built it as a place to disappear into for a few days, a low house of granite, timber and raw concrete that steps down the slope of a mountain above Lamego, in the hills just a few minutes away from the Douro Valley. Where the old rural stonework meets his minimalist glass openings, the walls give way to the valley and the water below. It sleeps up to 12 across three suites.
A stay here is organized around doing less. The house is built for silence, down to its acoustics. The water is the center of it: a paddleboard down to the reservoir, a swim, a bike out along the granite trails of Pretarouca and into the Douro beyond. The common rooms and the kitchen are shared and unhurried, made for cooking together, reading, or simply stopping, and the terraces and the stone patio let you soak in the valley views.
The wellness amenities are not an added extra but the heart of the design. The indoor spa is glazed floor to ceiling, so the valley is right there with you, and from there the house runs a full sequence: a heated indoor pool, a hammam, a relaxation area, and a heated outdoor pool set at the edge of the slope, looking straight down the Douro.
Outside the door, the setting earns its UNESCO status. Lamego and its great baroque staircase up to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios are a short drive, the vineyards of the Alto Douro, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, run along the river below, and the whole valley is made for slow days by car or on foot.

Best time to visit
Late spring through early fall are good for warm days and the Douro at its greenest, with the grape harvest in September and October. Misty winter days bring a cozy, magical atmosphere to the surrounding mountains, perfect for retreating indoors to enjoy the heated spa, hammam, and fireplaces. On lucky days, guests may even catch a dusting of snow in the surrounding hills.
