A Seductive Art Deco Original in Condesa with a Zapotec-inspired Makeover
A three-story Art Deco home on a quiet Condesa street has been transformed into a vibrant, artistic showplace inspired by traditional Zapotec culture. Created for entertaining, the seductive retreat is splashed with color, furnished with striking designs in limestone and tropical hardwoods, and hung with a rotating display of Mexican artists’ work, plus its interior- and furniture-designer-owner’s personal vintage collection.
A Designer’s Updated Condesa Pied-à-Terre
Bold shapes, limestone monoliths and tropical hardwood furniture breathe vibrant new life into this three-story, 1930s Art Deco original. The Mexico City pied-a-terre of an interior designer and furniture creator, it showcases both the host’s design work and pieces from his personal vintage collection, along with a curated selection of photography and objets d’art by Mexican artists.
Spread across three floors with ample space for entertaining and unwinding, the seductive space is surrounded by plant-filled terraces and equipped with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. The property’s main floor includes a salon-styled living and dining area for up to eight guests, a spacious kitchen that opens fully to the back patio, a lush space with dining for 10, and a yoga/fitness area.
The Terracotta Room and Blush Rooms are second story king-sized bedrooms, and the Blue Room is a queen-sized room with a large balcony and outdoor seating. Up top, the Annex is home to a primary bedroom suite with a sky dome bathtub and private terrace for park-like outdoor living and sunbathing. Bold color, the layering of texture and patterns, and sun-drenched spaces create a true tropical oasis in the heart of CDMX’s popular Condesa neighborhood.
Around
Like a colorful painting, the Condesa neighborhood brims with old-fashioned buildings, cozy coffee shops, leafy green spaces and buzzing cafes and cantinas. Locals and foreigners combine to create an active, upbeat area of town that is one of the city’s liveliest. Home to Mexico City’s elite since the early 20th century, La Condesa has a rich cultural history. Art Deco architecture and Art Nouveau mansions line most streets, giving the area a European feel, and the neighborhood is also home to several parks—Parque México, Parque España—plus dozens of leafy squares and aristocratic courtyards. Its abundance of green spaces has made it the neighborhood for dog-walkers and runners, and most parks have canine zones to welcome the pooches. Sidewalk cafes and restaurants join lower key taquerias, and tabernas join trendy boutiques along the neighborhood’s busy streets, and the area fills with young professionals and hipsters by night, who gather at post bars and nightclubs.
A great base for exploring greater Mexico City, La Condesa has bohemian origins—this section of the city rose in fame as the preferred stomping grounds of artists and intellectuals during the Mexican Revolution. The property is in Condesa’s Colonia Hípodromo, one of three smaller subdivisions that make up the entire neighborhood. Avenida Amsterdam has a leafy median at its center and is a great spot to take in the area’s classic architecture. And the vast Bosque de Chapultepec is right next door.
