An Isle of Skye Gem by Dualchas Architects
A minimalist aluminum and birch-ply sanctuary, Glasan was designed as a contemporary reimagining of the classic Scottish box-bed blackhouse. Conceived by the celebrated Dualchas Architects (who also brought us Creag na h-iolaire, Harlosh Black H and Harlosh Wood H), Glasan is a study in purposeful contrast. Its simple, aluminum-clad form offers a resilient shell against the wild Skye elements, intentionally receding into the landscape on the shores of Achnacloich Bay.
The cabin’s soul is its interior of oiled birch-faced plywood, its grid-like panels creating a rhythmic geometry that echoes the large floor tiles below. This warm, tactile palette is a deliberate counterpoint to the rugged landscape outside. The central feature is a modern take on the traditional “box-bed,” a cozy, recessed alcove for sleeping, complemented by curated minimalist Scandinavian-inspired furnishings.
Within its compact 45-square-meter footprint, the cabin is an essay in open-plan living. The ingenious layout flows from the living space to the deeply recessed box-bed, all oriented towards the view. The primary amenity is architectural: a massive gable-end window that pockets completely into the wall, dissolving the boundary between the birch-lined interior and the epic Cuillin ridge beyond.
Rather than impose on the terrain, the structure sits lightly on a raised steel platform, preserving the delicate coastal ecosystem. The landscape here is the main event—a raw, windswept expanse of heather and sea grass leading down to the bay.

Around
Known as the Garden of Skye, the Sleat peninsula offers a softer, more verdant landscape than the island’s rugged north. A car is essential to explore its winding single-track roads, which lead to hidden coves like Ord Bay (a 15-minute drive). For world-class dining, the celebrated Kinloch Lodge is nearby, offering impeccable estate-to-plate menus. The creative hub at Eilean Iarmain features the An Talla Dearg gallery and a cozy pub.
