An Architectural Art Retreat in Finland
Born from a cooperative of artists and thinkers, Hansaram was created to be a place of quiet contemplation and creative exchange. The design, led by Hans Park and Pekka Koivikko, follows principles of ecological sustainability while creating a powerful connection to the ancient forest. Primarily a home for invited artists, the residence opens its doors to holiday guests when not in use, offering a rare chance to inhabit a space that's dedicated to art but also a little off the beaten path.
The interiors are a tribute to Finnish modernism and international art. A selection of mid-century furniture from the iconic Finnish brand Artek, including pieces by Alvar Aalto, furnishes the living spaces. This creates a dialogue with the contemporary architecture and the impressive collection of art that adorns the walls.
Hansaram is enveloped by ancient forest, with an garden that's ideal for viewing the Northern Lights, the forest creating a dramatic backdrop for the celestial display when season and weather conditions align.
What we love
We love the coziness of this house where guests can stay surrounded by art and vintage Nordic furniture, with direct access to century-old forest. The house, designed with Nordic sensibilities and a Korean soul is one of a kind. Combine all of that with personalized winter activities such as guided skiing, animal-first and ethical husky sledding, and visits to a reindeer sanctuary, and you have the best combination of a relaxed Nordic lifestyle.
Layout
The residence sleeps up to four guests in two bedrooms. The home includes one bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with a small double bed. The layout is centered around an open-plan living and dining area with a private art gallery. A modern kitchen and a Finnish sauna complete the space.
Experiences
Transfer from the airport is included, and the hosts can curate a personalized itinerary for guests. A typical program (minimum four days) includes experiences in nature, with a full fridge and quality time back at base. Activities include national park hikes, outdoor cooking, skiing, husky rides, ice lake dips, and more. For those interested in the creative process, private art workshops can also be arranged.
Good to know
Please note this is an active artist residency, and its availability for holiday stays is typically during the winter season or between artist bookings. The stay is all-inclusive, with a full-service program and activities curated by the hosts. Given the remote nature and the services provided, a car is not required.
