Architect Ulrik Hellum's Mid-Century Style
Designed and built by Norwegian architect Ulrik Hellum in 1967, this holiday home in Norway has all of the hallmarks of both mid-century and Scandinavian style. We like the crisply whitewashed interiors punctuated with colorful accents and vintage furnishings.
A few minute's walk from the northern sea along the southeastern coast, the home is one of many houses and "hytter" (cabins) in the area of Larvik.
Located in a quiet residential neighborhood at the end of a dead-end street, the one-story home has the simple, mid-century lines he was known for combined with a distinctly Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic.
Hellum’s primary intention was to create architecture that perfectly adapts to its environment. The whitewashed interiors are flooded with natural light and include two living rooms: the first has a dining area and an open kitchen and a lounge. The second has two lounge areas, a library with a study area, and a wood burning stove for a cozy fire in wintertime.
There are three double bedrooms and one smaller transit room with a single sofa bed with room for up to six guests. The sofa beds offer additional sleeping accommodations for up to six more.
The spacious and private gardens are bordered by forest with a large wooden terrace for lounging in the fresh sea air.
NORWAY'S VIKING LANDS
Located along the southeastern coast of Norway where the famous salmon river Lågen leads into the northern sea. Sandvika beach is just a three-minute walk through the woods and the nearby Hvittensand beach is a lovely stretch of wild coastline and is considered one of the best for kitesurfing.
Vestfold in Norway's southern coastal region is home to the ancient tracks of Viking history where you’ll encounter many graves and sightseeing spots tread by the famous warriors. Beautiful year-round, there are many hiking and cycling trails and coastal areas to explore during the warmer months and cross country skiing in winter. The Kyststi trail runs for almost a thousand kilometers along the coast with the region between Stavern-Nevlunghavn-Helgeroa considered one of the most beautiful in Norway. Norway’s largest and best alpine ski region of Telemark is within two and a half hour drive but encompasses a vast range of beautiful valleys, lakes and towns.
The nearby cities of Larvik, Sandefjord and Tønsberg (the oldest town in Norway) and Oslo make for great day trips.
