A Historic Village House Overlooking the Aegean
This vacation home rental in Greece is huddled among the historic whitewashed houses of Hora overlooking the Aegean, under the watchful gaze of the magnificent 11th-century monastery above.
A lovely example of traditional Patmian architecture, the historic structure and gardens have been sensitively updated for contemporary living while highlighting its cultural charms.
One of several homes of a gallerist and fine art dealer, the home's original wooden ceilings, antique terracotta floors, and hand-crafted furniture is complemented with elegant antiques, colorful textiles, and a handpicked collection of art.
Read an interview with the owner in our Stories section here.

Entering through a shady sheltered garden, the ground level includes a living room and a fully equipped kitchen and dining area that seats up to 12. One level up is one twin en-suite bedroom, while the top floor includes a drawing room with a library and two en-suite double bedrooms. The upper level also features a pergola-shaded sitting area perfect for breakfast in the island air.
From the sundrenched sea-view terrace you'll have spectacular views across the Aegean where you can even charter the owner's motorboat to set out to sea.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
The owner's boat, a 36ft Cantieri del Garda Roar 36 with twin 280hp engines, is available for an additional charge of €800 a day, which includes a full-time captain, cold lunch, and 30 mins per day of diesel fuel (more can be used at additional cost).
A maid is included in the rental price, and is responsible for daily cleaning, making beds, preparing breakfast and (on request) preparing dinners.
AN ISLAND OF PILGRIMAGE
Of the islands in the Dodecanese chain, Patmos' compact size, great natural beauty and fascinating history make for an engaging visit.
Also known as the “Island of the Apocalypse”, Patmos is steeped in religious history and is the site of the origins of the Book of Revelation authored by Saint John the Divine from inside a nearby cave.
The imposing monastery also named after the saint, commands the hilltop overlooking the town and, in addition to the cave, is one of the country's most important sites of spiritual and historical pilgrimage.
The charming capital of Hora is a jumble of whitewashed medieval buildings among a maze of narrow alleys and squares with grand villas that once belonged to wealthy merchants and is ideally laid out for exploring on foot.
The main square and former market place-Platia Lotza is where you'll have one of the most extraordinary panoramas of the outer islands and even mainland Turkey in the distance.
There is no shortage of tavernas and cafes for grabbing a coffee or a bite and the island is well-known as a gastronomic destination including the many seaside eateries at the port town of Skala.
The interior of the island is crisscrossed with walking trails leading to small villages and churches and secluded turquoise beaches. The main beaches of Skala, Agriolivado and Livadi Geranou are within a short drive from town and there are several throughout the island that are almost deserted.
From Skala you can charter a boat to the outlying islands of Leros, Lipsi, Arki, and Marathi.
