Hollywoodland Horizons
A soaring new architectural residence that stands like a bold exclamation point below the Hollywood Sign, this marquee Hollywood Hills home stuns with its standout silhouette. Created by Yo Hakomori, StudioHAU, Executive Architect and Why Architecture, it's an awe-inspiring descent of inverted, L-shaped forms cantilevering like dominoes down the rocky hillside that offers sweeping views of Los Angeles. Each of the home's neo-brutalist, sculptural volumes presents floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors set between walls of angular formed concrete, all of it suspended high above the City of Angels.
Hollywood Gets a New Star
This architectural residence balances on the hillside directly under the HOLLYWOOD sign, which is emblazoned on the mountain above it. The building is laid out across four floors, dropping dramatically from street level. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliders open completely to integrate outdoor and interior spaces, and there is a beautiful Zen garden and guesthouse with a kitchen.
Built of reinforced concrete in 2023, the jaw-dropping home stands on massive caissons planted 85 feet (30 meters) deep, with structural steel beams completing its engineering feat. A series of nested L-shaped forms that create multiple wrap-around decks as they cascade down the mountain, each level takes in the bright lights of Los Angeles, the legendary Hollywood sign, and the Pacific Ocean, with the property’s vast rooftop deck offering the most dramatic view of all.
Strikingly modern, the stair step residence’s sleek interiors are fittingly Hollywood glam, decorated with a touch of vintage starlet mixed with more contemporary, California cool styling. The primary living room features a marble fireplace and cocktail bar that opens onto a truly suspended infinity pool, and there’s also a cozy lounge sitting area that features artwork, a piano and vivid garden views. The home’s upper floors are contemporary color blocks in green, silver and blue—levels hiding a black marble spa, an art gallery, a wine room, library and sauna. The master suite occupies an entire floor, and an independent guest house is connected to the residence, a luxurious panoramic perch with city views, a zen garden and deck, a private outdoor living and entertainment deck and a one-of-a-kind car lift allowing vehicles to be seen from indoors and out. In total, the residence sleeps eight guests.
Around
The historic enclave of Hollywoodland was designed as the first themed hillside residential development in the United States. Only minutes from downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood studios, the star-studded neighborhood has been home to many big names since its inception in the early 1920s. Nearly 600 private residences make up the neighborhood, once a steep, wild hillside covered in oak, holly, greasewood, and poppies. Natural springs in the area were marked by plots of fern, and the area was designed to be a gated community for “emerging Hollywood stars.” The famous Hollywood sign was installed as a promotion for the residential development and originally read “Hollywoodland.” Incandescent, the now-famous sign, a symbol of Los Angeles, was slated for demolition in 1949 but rescued by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who, rumor has it, agreed to remove the “LAND” part as a concession. The neighborhood’s original homes were required to be Storybook, Spanish, French Normandy, English Tudor or Mediterranean in style, and the area became an enduring magnet for celebrities, home to Humphrey Bogart back in the day, to Jack Nicholson, Leonardo di Caprio, Adele, and Jessica Alba today.
