A Time Capsule in Corsica
We're always discovering something new in Corsica, and this beautifully restored former convent in the heart of the mountains and the maquis reminds us why we return every year to our island home. With beautiful views of the Tyrrhenian, amazingly preserved history and delicious cuisine, we'll be back…
Located above the northeastern coast of Corsica on the Cap Corse, this former 15th-century Capuchin convent was home to monks before it was acquired in 1796 by a local noble family in whose hands it has remained since. The beauty of the original structure and the dedication and passion of the owners to preserve its authentic charm is evident throughout. Classic and traditional, all of the decor, furnishings, and original paintings bring back the rich history and timeless appeal. With seven double rooms and three singles, the house sleeps up to 12 guests. Each a time capsule of history and refinement, some still feature the original layout of the monk’s cells. The convent has been featured in multiple glossy magazines, including Vogue and Elle, as one of the most authentic places to stay in Corsica
This property is available for rent in its entirety year round, although it is also available for much of the year as a bed and breakfast. As a private rental, it sleeps 10 to 14 guests, and comes with a full range of services - see below.
The terraces, solarium and extensive gardens are lush and private and along with the pool offer amazing views of the countryside and out to sea.
The house is also available for events.
There is a wonderful edible garden and a large kitchen, a dining room with a table for 10-12 guests, a living room with TV and cable, plus two small living rooms on the first floor. Outside, there's a patio with table space for 10 + 6, as well as a large gas barbecue, garden furniture, sun beds, and another table for 10.
The owner, her husband and two children live on site, but have a separate entrance and won't disturb guests. There are resident animals: a dog, a cat, and three chickens (which offer free eggs).
Food services are available on request, including breakfast and dinner. Simple, traditional cuisine is prepared using fresh and locally-sourced products, and recipes passed down to the owner from her mother and grandmother. This extra service is available for between 35-38 euros per person, and if there are no dietary restrictions each meal is a surprise. There is an extra charge for a full-time chef. Wine and beverages are not included, but the owners work with local winemakers and can provide local organic wine and other drinks for an extra charge.
Other services on offer include booking activities, grocery shopping, booking restaurants, arranging for babysitters, and extra housekeeping. The property hosts seasonal yoga retreats. Please inquire for further details.
Located in the north of Corsica, on the Cap Corse in a village just outside of the port of Bastia in the Brando region, the convent is just above the Tyrrhenian coast. The charming fishing port and sandy coves of Erbalunga and Miomo are close by, as are the vineyards of Patrimonio to the west and the Gulf of Saint Florent. Ile Rousse Calvi is just over an hour's drive.
There is a beach within 10 minutes drive of the house, and a sandy beach 25 minutes away. The town of Erbalunga is 10 minutes by car and 30 minutes on foot. It's an adorable small fishing port with a variety of restaurants (from pizzeria to one Michelin star), several Corsican restaurants, and local seafood. The owners are happy to share suggestions for beaches, restaurants, road tours and hiking trails, and boat rides can even be arranged.
Bastia, the ferry and a supermarket are all within 20 minutes' drive. In Pietranera, 15 minutes away, you'll find a bakery and grocery store with local produce.
