A Medieval Home Marks Centuries Of Village Life
Dating back to the 12th century, this vacation home rental in France is a glimpse back in time in an unforgettably picturesque location. Inhabited by the beloved French century poet Jacques Prévert during the mid-20th century, the home's charm and romance has been well preserved.
A Medieval Home Marks Centuries Of Village Life
Situated in the heart of the medieval walled village of Saint Paul de Vence with magnificent views of both the Mediterranean to the south and the mountains to the north, this 12th-century house has been beautifully restored while keeping all of its amazing original character and features intact.
The house sits at the intersection of two roads in the center of town, coming to a point like a ship's bow. Composed of old stone, brick, and ancient wooden timbers, the home's authentic charm seems frozen in time.
Inside, the main living space features a fireside sitting room and an eat in kitchen, both with picture windows that open out to the views.
There are two en-suite bedrooms, one with a vaulted-ceiling bathroom accessed through a mysterious tunnel, with room for four guests. Decorated in simple Provincial style, the home is an enchanting slice of life.
There's a sunny and private jasmine-covered terrace outside, ideal for sipping wine or coffee while enjoying the views and village life.
A MEDIEVAL VILLAGE FROZEN IN TIME
Perched on a narrow strip of land between two valleys, St. Paul de Vence is one of the most intact medieval villages of the region, with beautiful views of the Mediterranean and mountains in the distance and much of the structures and fortified ramparts still intact. With all vehicles prohibited from its core, the village has naturally attracted foot traffic, with high season brimming with tourists.
Since Picasso and Chagall and the beau monde of showbiz and society wandered through during the post war years (Chagall is buried in the town's cemetary), the town has transformed from a sleepy village into a town of cafe society, with a plethora of galleries, artists and cafes packed during the season.
Nearby Tourrettes-sur-Loup and Vence are just as beautiful and more relaxed with slightly less traffic but just as picturesque. Head down to the coast to the glittering towns and beaches of the Cote d'Azur for a dose of glamour and excitement.
