An Ancient Watchtower's Elegant Transformation
Like a lone sentinel rising from a picturesque mountain setting, this villa for rent in Italy is alive with history and enchantment. A former watchtower erected to defend the Marca Fermana, it was built in 1080 and is situated in the center of the Sibillini Mountains National Park between Monte Sibilla, the Gola dell’Infernaccio, and the medieval village of Montefortino.
Dominating the surrounding valley from its perch, the imposing tower has stood the test of time and has been extensively restored in keeping with the period, traditional craftsmanship, and local materials to become a luxurious and unusual venue for a holiday (as featured in The Sunday Times and Forbes).
The structure’s original thick stone walls, beamed ceilings, floors, and hand-carved doors hark back to its noble origins, while the interiors are elegantly appointed with careful attention to detail to complement the historic period. The ground floor includes the living room with a fireplace and dining area, an open-plan kitchen, and a double bedroom. Each room leads directly to the outdoor spaces and terraces. Upstairs, are two additional double bedrooms.
The gardens ramble throughout the mountainside and are filled with unique works of "land art" and sculpture, and include a private amphitheater with breathtaking views.
AROUND
Bring your walking shoes, because Le Marche is rich in activities, ancient architecture and landscapes that you’re going to want to see up close. There are many trails close to the property among the gentle peaks of the Monti Sibillini National Park including the gorgeous Gole dell’Infernaccio, 3km from the property. The stunning natural gorges dug over hundreds of thousands of years by the River Tenna are located between Monte Priora and the Sibilla, where you can trek to the hermitage of San Leonardo.
With the Adriatic Sea to the east and the central Apennines to the west, you’re near some of Italy’s best beaches and most picturesque mountain villages. Take a trek on the Sibillini mountain, with a stop at Mount Vettore. Hop in a car to taxi and cruise around Ascoli Piceno with its marvelous Piazza del Popolo, dubbed “the Living Room of Italy”, with an old theatre that used to serve as the center of the area’s entertainment. Continue your time warp with a visit to Offida, the town of tombolo lace makers, and visit the lace museum to learn about the intricate craft.
Ancona, the regional capital, takes you to the sea, where you can bathe in the Conero Riviera. You can also opt for an excursion to the seaside resorts. And you’d be remiss not to sample all of the regional dishes, especially those that contain white and black truffles, or the fish and lamb dishes accompanied with a bottle of Rosso Piceno Superiore or Verdicchio.
