Boathouse-Inspired Artistry on Europe’s Largest Lake

Clad completely in orange-patinaed corten steel with a nine-meter windowed façade, this striking waterfront home with a private pontoon makes a masterpiece of shimmering Lake Geneva (known as Lac Léman in France). Created in 2010 by a European artist in collaboration with architects Michael Widrig and Daniel Kaufmann, the residence melds form with function, drawing all eyes outward to the lake’s placid waters from a sculptural structure mimicking a boat storage’s safe harbor.

Three elements were used to construct this residential gem—larch wood, black steel, and concrete, creating a robust, rectilinear residence that merges surprisingly subtly into the natural landscape surrounding it. The home’s warm, larch-covered interior features cathedral ceilings brightened by abundant natural light and an open-air mezzanine overlooking the generous, two-story living room space with designer furnishings. Glossy walls are hung with art. Made-to-measure furniture rises from the polished concrete floors. And views of the lake are commanding and serene, with the private pier and lakefront terrace added luxuries.

Set only steps from Lake Geneva’s calm, cooling waters, the home is found at the end of a winding driveway. Hosts offer several timeless lake living experiences, from strolling the shores (Lake Geneva is Europe’s largest lake), to paragliding or hot air ballooning or biking the well-marked cycling paths that circle the lake. Sailing, rowing, kayaking and whitewater rafting excursions are also available, and Lake Geneva possesses numerous calm beaches, ideal for swimming, splashing and picnicking. Nearby Evian-les-Bains is famed for its wellness pursuits and historical sites. Go for massage and spa offerings. Take in its healing waters.
