An Architect's Townhouse with Arena Views
Conceived as a "house for four seasons," this personal project adapts to light and climate. The renovation magnifies the existing structure, using materials like local Fontvieille stone veiled in limewash. The architects cleverly inserted the kitchen and bathrooms as contemporary white boxes within the old frame, creating a clear and respectful dialogue between heritage and modernity.
The home’s spine is a staircase, its color subtly shifting to green as it ascends towards the rooftop garden. In winter, a fireplace warms the stone volumes; in summer, natural ventilation keeps the spaces comfortable without artifice. Sunlight carves its way through, illuminating a spare collection of contemporary furnishings, books, and a record player.
The rooftop terrace is a private oasis suspended above the historic city. It features a small plunge pool (1x2 meters) lined in green mosaic, positioned for a cooling swim while gazing at the Arles arenas. An outdoor dining area makes it an unforgettable spot for an evening aperitif, while planted trees offer a touch of privacy.
What we love
We fell for the roof terrace with the plunge pool and direct view to the arena. The tasteful renovation of the townhouse, the combination of sleek materials with warm wooden tones and the color spots create such a unique and welcoming atmosphere. Oh, and the floor tiles in the bedroom!
Layout
This vacation home for rent in Arles sleeps up to four guests. It begins in a 17th-century vaulted cellar. The ground floor holds a dedicated workspace. On the first floor are two cozy double bedrooms (140cm beds), where the light is softest. The second floor holds the kitchen and shared bathroom. Finally, the top floor opens into a living room that flows directly onto the rooftop terrace.
Good to know
This home is not suitable for young children or guests with mobility issues due to its many steep, old staircases. The house does not have air conditioning but stays cool with shutters and fans. Access by car is limited, but free and paid public parking are available within a three to 10-minute walk.
