A Designer's Two-Story Family Home in Copenhagen's Nørrebro

Owner-designer Camila spent 20 years living in abroad before returning to Copenhagen and creating a family home. When she settled in Nørrebro, it was in a two-story apartment under the building's original timber beams. What she created is calm and full of light, a home reads the way the neighborhood does. Nørrebro is Copenhagen's melting pot, historically working-class, now the address for its younger, more creative population, and the interiors answer it with a spare, warm version of classic Scandinavian design: pale wood, generous daylight, room to spread out.

Upstairs, a loft has been given over to the children, framed by the same beams, with space to climb and play. Downstairs, an open living and dining room is for gathering. Space is the luxury here, and it is in short supply in a central Copenhagen apartment. There is room for a family to be together and room to be apart, a desk to work from, and a kitchen set up for cooking at home.

A fenced communal garden sits a few doors down, safe for children and quiet enough to read in. The bus into the center is a three-minute walk away, but the design landmarks start on the doorstep. Superkilen, the multicolored public park two streets over, was built by Bjarke Ingels Group with Topotek 1 and Superflex as a portrait of the many nationalities who live here.

Layout

This vacation home for rent in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, sleeps up to six guests. The home is arranged over two floors. The open living and dining room and the kitchen sit on the lower floor. The three bedrooms and a children's loft are above. Each bedroom has a super-king bed, and the loft holds a single bed. There are two shared bathrooms, each with a walk-in shower.

Good to know

The apartment is on the fourth floor with elevator access. There is no air conditioning. You are asked to remove your shoes on arrival to avoid damaging the floor. The children's loft bed is reached by a ladder, so take care with very young children. A crib is available on request. Parking in the neighborhood is challenging, so public transport is the easy way around, with the bus stop a three-minute walk away. Children and infants are welcome. No pets, parties, or smoking.

Around

Nørrebro is Copenhagen's melting pot, a district that started scruffy and working-class and became the city's most creative corner. The design starts locally. Superkilen, two streets over, is a public park built as a portrait of the neighborhood's many nationalities, with objects gathered from around the world. Ravnsborggade is the street for antiques and vintage design, and Assistens Cemetery, a 12-minute walk, doubles as a green park and the resting place of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard.

The food is the other draw. Five minutes away, Bæst turns out wood-fired sourdough pizza with mozzarella made in-house, and its bakery, Mirabelle, handles the morning pastries and cardamom buns. Kiin Kiin, four minutes on, is one of the city's most celebrated Thai kitchens. For design at the city scale, Designmuseum Danmark and its collection of Danish Modern chairs is a short ride south. The bus into the center is three minutes from the door, putting Tivoli Gardens, the Zoo, and Kastellet about 20 minutes away.
