Scandinavian Ski Chalet
A classic Scandinavian chalet of wood and stone created for minimal ecological impact to be a year-round, family-focused getaway in Norway’s largest ski resort, this cabin is comprised of two, clean lined, traditional Nordic volumes, one housing a modern, minimalist, multilevel residence, the other holding a sleek sauna/bath and ski room.
Pure and minimal, built of a particular kind of timber that minimizes waste and uses the entire tree in construction, this raw, cross-laminated wood cabin showcases exposed wood walls that will develop a rustic patina over time. The combined creation of two German-Norwegian families, the chalet is designed for practicality and ease, a modern Viking longhouse with a simple floor plan. Its striking open interior is cut with oversized windows, some offering window seats, and the pure architecture draws all eyes outdoors to views of the evergreen blanketed Trysilfjell Valley. The bright, free-flowing living, dining and kitchen areas are warmed by a designer, wood-burning fire box, and bedrooms, bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes occupy the other half of the chalet. Double rooms were designed for parents and a pair of bunk rooms for the kids. An upper-level space holds a sofa and work station, with boardwalk-like deck seating outdoors.
AROUND
Located in Scandinavia’s largest ski resort area, the modern log cabin is surrounded by evergreen trees, with expansive views of Trysil village and valley. Known for its skiing and snowboarding, the area offers 70 slopes of all levels, multiple terrain parks, and runs for cross country skiers, too. The station’s ski school was the breeding ground for some members of the Norwegian and Swedish national teams, both of which train on Trysil’s extreme black pistes and in its Free Ski Parks. Cross country skiers can glide out the cabin door onto some 500km of groomed trails, and dog sledding tours and snowmobile rides are also available.
Summer finds Trysil filling with hikers and bikers who come for the many trails above tree line and the big panoramic views. In warmer months, ski lifts carry mountain bikers to the summits. Fishing and canoeing are summertime favorites, too, and there’s a golf course nearby as well. Trysil village is about five kilometers from the cabin, and the town has supermarkets and shops, restaurants and spa facilities. The chalet offers views on the valley and towards the mountain as well, with the neighboring Swedish mountains visible on clear days.
