Set along the spectacular Snaefellsness peninsula on the island’s west coast, this vacation home for rent in Iceland is a sensory delight of art, design and remarkable scenery.

Owned by an abstract expressionist artist whose studio is located below the property, the home is a showcase of her considerable creative and design talents. 

Originally built in the 1960s, the post-modernist home is one of just a handful remaining that features the distinctive butterfly roofline and streamlined design.

The interiors are serene but stylish with 180-degree views of the glaciers, the Faxafloi Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The living and dining areas share the forward position in the house with the fully equipped kitchen to the side. There are three double bedrooms that can sleep up to six guests, one with access to a balcony with mountain and ocean views.

The house is decorated with a colorful mix of vintage and contemporary pieces and an artistic eye that inspires creativity. Fascinating in all weather and seasons, this is a unique and very personal escape for enjoying the beauty of Iceland.

GATEWAY TO SNAEFELLSNESS

The town of Borgarnes is the gateway to the Snaefellsness peninsula region of western Iceland and makes the perfect home base for exploring the area’s rich variety of sites and activities. 

Less than an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, the area is home to the dramatic Snæfellsjökull glacier (immortalized by Jules Verne in his novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth”) as well as the Hafnarfjall, Eriksjökull and Langjökull glaciers. From hiking the vast expanses and visiting the UNESCO Breidafjordur nature reserve, to soaking in the area’s thermal spas and exploring Glymur, Europe’s highest waterfall, this is a convenient and strategic region. 

Come between late August through April when you’ll have the best timing and the least light pollution for viewing the famous Aurora Borealis’ northern lights.  

The owner has an impressive list of recommendations for activities and eateries, which she is happy to share. Some highlights include the luxury geothermal spa Krauma.is, which is 35 minutes from the house, and the nearby Borgarnes geothermal swimming pool, which is great for all ages. She also recommends the Settlement Center with its exhibitions about the first settlers and the Egils Saga, as well as the Borgarnes Museum, with its fascinating display of birds and historical photography collection. If you don't already have plans for exploring the island, she can provide some great itineraries.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: There’s dramatic beauty year-round. Northern lights are often seen from the house (given the right conditions)anywhere from late August until April. In the fall lenticular cloud formations are common and in winter, ice formations float out from the estuary into the ocean.
