The island is home to the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtles’ breeding grounds and also zigzagged by centuries’ old vineyards of more than 60 different varietals. 

The Venetians, who once occupied the island, called it “the Flower of the East” and considered Zakynthos a treasured location in their empire. Today, tourists come mostly for the island’s stunning beaches. Most famous is Shipwreck Beach, with its landed vessel and the cliff-backed stretches of Keri and Kryoneri, but the island’s white sands and protected coves and bays are abundant.
