Glass Boxes on a North Shore Cliff
Ten minutes down a jungle road off the Hana Highway, this long-term rental property is made up of two Brutalist boxy structures. It stands stacked, offset and cantilevered on an ocean-facing garden green, the buildings' solid geometry widened by walls of glass, sheltered lanais and the vast Pacific on the horizon.
Stacked, Secluded and Sustainable: An Off-Grid Architectural Gem on the Pacific
This pair of panoramic, glass-fronted structures was designed by Maui architect Peter Niess of Maui Architectural Group in collaboration with the property’s Canadian owner. The pair of cantilevered structures showcases teak and native Koa wood on the inside, and a ceramic tile-covered exterior that’s solar-powered and accented by lava rock, with a living roof up top.
The two rectangular boxes are entirely off-grid powered by solar and wind, with water catchment for potable water and a well for landscaping. The flat roof sprouts tropical grasses, and there’s an on-site food forest with orchards growing coconuts, citrus and bananas, plus other produce in multiple vegetable and herb gardens. The home is fully automated with a generator backup.
Nestled into the slopes of Haleakala on Maui’s north shore, the home’s design is mid-century modern with nods to Mies van der Rohe, Tadao Ando and Marcio Kogan. The open-plan space offers abundant natural light and is designed as a pair of transformable modular-styled spaces for work, rest, creation, meditation and life, the working box above and living box below.
The home occupies a vast green expanse of lawns and sprawling tropical gardens and groves. Sunsets over the Pacific are breathtaking, and morning whale watching is highly recommended. With sheltered lanais, decks and an outdoor shower, there's ease of outdoor living. Joining the roof garden of tropical grasses and the vast lawn and culitivated gardens and orchards are neat beds of plumeria and jasmine, flowering shrubs and waving palms.
Please note: this home is available for rentals of six months or longer.
