An Architectural Refuge in Son Serra de Marina
Designed by architects Munarq within the coastal dune systems of Son Serra de Marina, this home reimagines the traditional Mallorcan fisherman’s hut as a modern architectural sanctuary. Architects Pau and Rafel Munar conceived this shelter as a dialogue between tradition and ecology. Two volumes intersect to create a hierarchical living space: one a double-height void for natural air circulation, the other a sloping structure with a celestial window.
Walls are clad in a breathable mixture of earth and lime, regulating humidity naturally. Furnishings are minimal to highlight the structural intent, with a wood-burning stove serving as the winter’s primary energy source. Large windows frame the native vegetation, blurring the boundary between the internal refuge and the wild dunes.
The property is defined by its northern porch—an essential summer sanctuary that shields guests from the sun while catching cooling sea breezes. The walled garden is a deliberate extension of the ecosystem, featuring native salt-tolerant plants that require no artificial intervention.
What we love
What we love most about Munarq’s approach here is the restraint. They’ve managed to take the DNA of a traditional Mallorcan fisherman’s hut and elevate it into something that feels incredibly current but completely soulful. It’s a place that rewards a slower pace; it’s sophisticated, but it’s that rare, authentic kind of luxury that doesn’t need to shout to be heard.
Layout
This vacation home for rent in Son Serra de Marina sleeps up to six guests. The main living area occupies a double-height volume. There are three bedrooms: two primary rooms featuring double beds and a third bedroom equipped with twin beds. A central bathroom utilizes natural materials to maintain the home’s bioclimatic integrity.
Good to know
This property is a high-performance bioclimatic home; there is no traditional air conditioning, as the architecture uses thermal mass and cross-ventilation for cooling. In winter, the wood stove provides ample warmth. The location is wonderfully isolated and quiet, particularly during the off-season. A car is essential for exploring the nearby villages and transporting supplies.

Around
Son Serra de Marina remains one of Mallorca’s last coastal bastions untouched by mass tourism. Located on the bay of Alcudia, the village is characterized by its rugged beauty and the backdrop of the Serra de Arta. The beach, a 10-minute walk from the shelter, is a haven for surfers and kite-boarders. For cultural excursions, the historic town of Artà is roughly 15 kilometers away, offering artisanal markets and prehistoric Talayotic sites. While the village has a handful of excellent seafood restaurants and a small supermarket, the property’s charm lies in its off-the-grid feel within a protected natural area.
