Seaview Suites and a Garden Osteria on the Wild Edge of the Cyclades
Spina sits at Ambeli Bay on the northwestern tip of Folegandros, one of the Cyclades' least-trafficked islands, and arguably its most considered. Its owners discovered this bay 20 years ago, led there by a local fisherman named Minos, and spent two decades building towards one vision: five rooms, each with a private seaview terrace and outdoor shower, a plastic-free, no-AC ethos, and a charcoal-fired osteria (open June to September) fed by what is said to be the largest kitchen garden on the island.
The name comes from spina—the Italian and Greek word for thorn—a nod to the wild thistles of Ambeli that first captivated the owners. The five suites bear Greek names: Thál, Fós, Aér, Petra, Selíni (sea, light, air, stone, moon). Materials follow that same logic: rough timber, local stone, linen, and ceramic. Ceiling fans instead of air conditioning. Reusable water bottles in each room. The absence of the expected is the point.
The property's kitchen garden, enclosed by dry-stone walls and fed by a subterranean spring, grows eggplants, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, and tamarisks.
What we love
Folegandros is already one of those islands where you feel smug just for knowing about it, and Ambeli Bay is its furthest, quietest corner—dirt road, pebble beach, north winds blocked by the cliffs. The Italian owners of Spina have been coming here for 20 years, which explains why it feels less like a hotel someone built and more like a place someone couldn't stop themselves from making. The on-site osteria grows most of what it cooks, fires everything on charcoal, and opens each May as the island itself is waking up.

Around
Folegandros has no airport and no cruise ships, which is precisely the point. The island's permanent population of around 700 rises to roughly 3,000 in summer, but never tips into the frenzy of Santorini or Mykonos. Chora, the cliff-hanging capital about 15 minutes by road, is one of the most architecturally intact villages in the Cyclades—a 13th-century Venetian kastro still inhabited, five linked squares shaded by plane trees, and the whitewashed Church of Panagia perched above the sea with what is often called the second-best sunset view in Greece. Eva's Garden in Chora offers inventive Greek cooking sourced from the chef's own Livadi farm. Sinadisi in Ano Meria, family-run since 1920, is the place for matsata, the island's signature handmade pasta. A car is essential. Beach access beyond Ambeli requires either a boat or a confident driver on unmade roads.
