We love the stark drama of the landscape and how this house perfects its place in the scene with deep, dramatic color. Designed after the humble 18th-century coastal houses of the region, this sophisticated update recreates the best of rustic Icelandic culture with a casual mix of 21st-century warmth and refinement.
An Homage To The First Settlers' Icelandic Timber Houses
Situated at the base of mount Hafnarfjall right along the shores of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, this traditional timber house was built in the authentic 18th-19th century style of country houses of the region and gets the tone and style just right. Just north of Reykjavik on the western side of the island, you are situated in a diverse and peaceful landscape of fjords and volcanic peaks along with vast stretches of rugged coast and sea cliffs in a rare and ancient forest from the time of the first settlers.
Built entirely of timber, the country cottage is painted in a deep black pitch originally derived from natural tar to withstand the elements. The simple clapboard silhouette is dwarfed by the amazing mountains in the background and matches its environment perfectly.
The interiors are modest in attitude but with a great combination of chic modern personality and old-world style designed by Icelandic designer Rut Káradóttir. The lofty open plan living areas are bright and chic with dark saturated hues that mimic the landscape.
With a soaring A-frame layout, the living, dining, and kitchen areas share the ground floor with the master bedroom along with a cozy separate loft bedroom at the top overlooking the living room. With room for up to four guests, the house is ideal for a family or group of friends to share. This is a charming and welcoming house that brings out the best of the raw natural beauty of Iceland.
THE SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA
The town of Borgarnes is only five minutes drive away along the western coast of Iceland. Less than an hour's drive from Reykjavik, the area is home to the dramatic Snæfellsjökull glacier (immortalized by Jules Verne in his novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth") and overlooks the Snæfellsnes peninsula from where you can explore the western coast of the island.
Come between October and March when you'll have the best timing and the least light pollution for viewing the famous Aurora Borealis' northern lights.
