An 18th-Century Greenhouse Turned Modern Retreat in Como
Once the orangery for Villa Giovannina, an estate dating back to the 1800s, this glass-and-iron structure was carefully dismantled and resurrected by Galli Cavalcabo Studio. The project preserves the building's soul while transforming it into a standalone home. The original family stewards the land, ensuring the design respectfully blends into the historic landscape.
Inside, Lombard terracotta floors and custom wood joinery create a tactile environment, while walls feature hand-painted foliage motifs and birds in soft pastel tones, and walls of glass flood the spaces with an almost painterly Italian light. The open-plan living area is anchored by a contemporary kitchen and dining space for gathering.
The grounds are a private world of mature trees and quiet lawns, and an outdoor terrace provides space for alfresco dining.
What we love
The architectural dialogue between the 19th-century iron structure and the minimalist interior is perfectly executed. We love the romance of the hidden Treehouse and the estate’s commitment to nature. It is a thoughtful and sophisticated restoration that feels both historic and entirely new.
