A Solar-Powered Desert Hideaway with Zero Light Pollution for Darkest Night Skies
With its cushy king bedroom cut through by a skylight, this secluded, off-grid cabin lets you stargaze when you’re all tucked in and cozy. Set about 12 minutes into the Mojave Desert from Pioneertown, it offers seclusion, tranquility and silence on an arid, five-acre stretch of desert, with only one neighboring property, a sister cabin, out of sight nearby.
The owners are creators who’ve worked renovation projects and refurbs, and the cabin was designed in collaboration with Duane Smith's design firm Hundred Mile House, a studio focused on sustainability and environmental best practices.
With big views for 360 degrees and zero light pollution, the cabin lets you live immersed in the wild, albeit with modern conveniences. The cabin’s interiors (with clever built-ins and desert-toned art and textiles) are design-magazine worthy, yet an abundance of windows draws all eyes outdoors. There’s a mid-century-inspired gas fireplace inside and lots of amenties outdoors, including a gas fire pit and grill, dining and seating, shower, and areas for observing the rugged, mountain-encircled desert lot of scrub and rock. A generator serves as back up just in case, and there’s an in-cabin monitor to prevent it kicking in.
Around
This secluded cabin offers amazing views of the surrounding landscape and a comfortable, cozy location for complete disconnection from everyday life. If you do venture out, Pioneertown is about 15 minutes away, with its supermarkets, restaurants/cafes, and music scene.
Surrounded by rugged hills and classic desert scrub, the cabin stands in an area of the California desert that’s home to Joshua Tree National Park, retro glam Palm Springs and the new-age artistic playground of the Coachella Valley. Pioneertown itself is a historic Hollywood remnant, a Wild West movie set turned rugged desert community, with a handful of galleries and roadhouses, including the famous Pappy and Harriet’s Palace.
Outdoor adventures are abundant in the area, including hiking, mountain biking and rock-climbing in and around Joshua Tree National Park and the Yucca Valley, plus day trips to the cooler landscapes of the San Jacinto mountains, Indian Canyon and Palm Canyon.
