A Carvalhal Pool Villa Designed for Gathering
Carvalhal is the quieter of Comporta's villages, with fewer boutiques, more locals at the café, and the beach a short walk rather than a destination. The Sand House sits here, arranged as a set of independent volumes around a central garden and a 15-metre pool. The rice paddies start where the garden ends, and the sand beach is one kilometer away.
The home's 650 square meters divide naturally between communal space and private bedrooms, with the independent-volume layout allowing guests space to spread out when needed. The kitchen has everything—oven, dishwasher, coffee machine, juicer. Plus there's air conditioning and underfloor heating throughout, with six fans, and mosquito nets in every room.
The garden is 2,500 square meters in size. The pool is 15 x 3 meters. A barbecue is set up for evenings in. The rock beach is right there, and the sand beach is a kilometer down the road.
What we love
Fourteen people, and everyone finds their own rhythm—that's the appeal of this home. The separate volumes mean you can disappear when you need to, but the garden is where everyone ends up eventually. Walk out the front door and Restaurante Sal is practically next door, on the sand at Carvalhal beach. Go once for the sunset, and you'll probably go back.
Layout
This vacation home for rent in Carvalhal, Comporta, sleeps up to 14 guests in six bedrooms across the independent structures (three kings, two kings with a single alongside, and one room with two singles). There are six bathrooms and a separate WC.
Experiences
Surf lessons are available with Surf in Comporta, based on Carvalhal beach. Horseback riding through the rice fields and dunes with Cavalos na Areia is one of the better ways to understand the landscape. Other excursions include cycling between the paddies and pine forest (bikes are available locally), dolphin and flamingo watching by boat on the Sado Estuary, and golf at Comporta Dunes, designed by David McLay Kidd, 3.5 kilometers away.

Around
Carvalhal is the village where people from Lisbon have been coming for decades. Restaurante Sal is right on the sand: grilled fish, cold wine, a view of the Atlantic that earns every mention it gets. For a proper dinner, drive 15 minutes to Cavalariça in Comporta village, a former stable turned Michelin-recommended restaurant, where the fish comes from Sesimbra, the oysters from the Sado, and the cocktails are sharp enough to make you stay longer than planned. Worth the detour on at least one evening: the Carrasqueira Palafitic Pier, a zig-zagging wooden pier built on irregular stilts by local fishermen in the 1950s, 17 kilometers north. A car is essential for all of it.
