Serenity in the Wild: A Tranquil Retreat in the Mojave Desert
With its soft, desert-hued embrace of light woods and rose-tinted accents, this Mojave Desert hideaway for two offers a tranquil retreat from the rugged wilds surrounding it. The off-grid, Pipes Canyon cabin’s king-sized bed is set under a skylight for indoor stargazing, and the house occupies a secluded five acres about 12 minutes’ drive from Pioneertown.
Desert Hideaway for Two Secluded in Picturesque Pipes Canyon
A secluded getaway on a five-acre lot, the only neighbor its sister property, The Ocotillo, this desert home was designed for stargazing. Solar powered, with unpolluted dark night skies, the hideaway feels more house than cabin, with its king bedroom, bright living area with built-in seating cut through with panoramic sliders and windows, plus a designer corner fireplace. The palest, rose-tinted galley kitchen completes the space, with a small dining table for fireside meals. And even the bathroom is a view space, with an oversized glass door.
Outside, there’s a covered patio space with a fire pit, grill and dining table for easy relaxation and an outdoor shower. The gravelly lot is dotted with spiky desert vegetation that comes alive if you sit still awhile, watch, and wait. And come nightfall—the stars!
Around
The secluded timbered retreat offers amazing views of the surrounding desert and mountain landscape and presents a comfortable, cozy location for complete disconnection from everyday life in Pipes Canyon in the Mojave Desert. Quiet, peaceful, wild and starry, the cabin itself was created for unwinding. If you do decide to depart, Pioneertown is about 15 minutes’ away, with its restaurants, cafes and music scene.
Surrounded by sand, rugged hills and classic desert scrub and cactus, the house stands in an area of the California desert that’s home to Joshua Tree National Park, retro glam Palm Springs and the new-age artistic playground of the Coachella Valley. Pioneertown itself is a historic Hollywood remnant, a Wild West movie set turned rugged desert community, home to gritty residents who find inspiration in the boulder- and cacti-studded landscape. It offers a handful of galleries and roadhouses, including the famous Pappy and Harriet’s Palace.
Outdoor adventures are abundant in the area, including hiking, mountain biking and rock-climbing in and around Joshua Tree National Park and the Yucca Valley, and day trips to the cooler landscapes of the San Jacinto mountains, Indian Canyon or Palm Canyon.
