Brutalism on the Oaxaca Coastline
Guided by the principles of biophilic design, this retreat on the pristine Oaxaca coastline was designed by architect Raquel Font of Studio Font as a self-sustaining architectural statement. Drawing inspiration from the minimalism of Tadao Ando, the home uses raw concrete and warm timber to frame the interplay of light and shadow. The property is a 100% ecological sanctuary, featuring a saltwater infinity pool, solar power, and filtered water. Surrounded by a protected ecological zone and cactus gardens, it provides an exclusive, off-grid experience where the built environment and untamed nature exist in absolute, quiet harmony.
Interiors celebrate a palette of raw concrete, local parota wood, and neutral textiles. Bespoke lighting and artisanal ceramics anchor the minimalist aesthetic. Large-scale openings replace traditional windows, allowing Pacific breezes to circulate through the home. Every piece of furniture was hand-selected or custom-designed to reflect Oaxacan craftsmanship, ensuring the space feels both monastic and deeply tactile.
The exterior is defined by a shimmering saltwater infinity pool that appears to merge with the Pacific horizon. A shaded palapa provides a cool respite for alfresco dining, while a sun-drenched deck is designed for morning rituals. The property sits within a turtle-nesting sanctuary, offering direct, private access to a wild beach where seasonal whale sightings and coastal wildlife are common.
What we love
We love how the raw concrete walls are left totally open to the breeze, so you never feel like you’re actually "inside." The heavy architecture feels so light, almost like a permanent campsite that happens to have gorgeous parota wood and a saltwater pool. Just sitting and watching the Pacific without any distractions, knowing the beach right below is a quiet turtle sanctuary, makes the whole place feel incredibly peaceful.
Layout
This vacation home for rent in Santa María Tonameca sleeps up to five guests. This architectural villa features two primary master suites and one mezzanine loft. Both master suites include king beds, open-air en-suite bathrooms, and private terraces overlooking the ocean. The mezzanine provides a flexible space with a sofa bed. Two full bathrooms feature stone-tiled finishes, while the central social area integrates a kitchen and a dining zone.
Experiences
Bookable on-site services include private yoga sessions in the garden or curated mezcal tastings. The local team can arrange for a private chef to prepare regional Oaxacan cuisine. Nearby mangrove lagoon tours and surf lessons at local breaks are also available.
Good to know
The villa is located on a remote stretch of coastline reached via a scenic, unpaved road, so a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. Power is provided by a modern solar system, and the architecture relies on natural ventilation and ceiling fans rather than air conditioning. Starlink internet is provided. Guests should note the proximity to a turtle-nesting beach and respect local ecological guidelines.
