Italy’s Lake Como needs little introduction, the sparkling, upscale area in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region celebrated for its dramatic scenery, its celebrity residents, and its Renaissance-era architecture in its namesake town of Como. The 146-square-kilometer lake offers natural beauty and a glam ambiance as well as charming, authentic Italian country villages climbing into the hills above its shores, ringed by rugged mountains ideal for hiking.
Opulent villas line its shores, some open to the public, others visible from the comfort of a boat on the deep blue water. Many of the villas' gardens are astoundingly lush and manicured, including the gardens at Villa Serbelloni, Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi. The funicular ride in Brunate takes passengers to a panoramic viewpoint, and the Isola Comacina is the lake’s sole island, known for its Roman ruins. A 10-kilometer greenway surrounds the lake, an easy walking trail suitable for all levels, while the steeper Il Sentiero del Viandante attracts more advanced hikers.
