Located among the silvery dunes and traditional thatched cottages of Amerland Island, this elegant black beach house cuts an imposing silhouette. Only 500m from the expansive sands of the beachfront, it's a perfect location to recharge, and large enough to bring the whole family.

Inside, there's an almost complete absence of extraneous embellishment which creates a mesmerizingly tranquil space. The house was brought to life by Dutch design company Studiotoff, whose designs combine Scandinavian simplicity with homely comforts and livable luxury. 

Its cool beachy vibe is enhanced by crisp, cool textures in whites, creams and gentle browns, as well as large windows that allow light to flood in and the surrounding landscape to serve as decor. The views are augmented by simple, elegant furnishings and fittings by Vitra, Piet Boon, Borek, Flos, Normann Copenhagen, Muuto, and Linteloo & Foscarini.

Villa Zilverduin has a large open-plan ground floor, with cooking, eating, dining and sitting areas. There are four bedrooms that sleep up to 8 guests. The ground-floor bedroom has two single beds, an en-suite shower and sink. On the upper level, there are three bedrooms, with double beds. The master has its own bathroom, while the other two bedrooms share one. 

And down below it all? A basement that's made for entertaining, with a cinema/TV room and a table tennis table. It's perfect for the occasional rainy day. On sunny days, however, the place to be is the large grassy garden with its spacious wooden terrace. AROUND

The West Frisian island of Ameland is only 8km from the mainland, and doesn't take long to reach by ferry. The house is within easy cycling distance of Nes, the island's second largest village, where the ferry lands. But when we say largest, take note: there are just over 3,000 residents on the whole island. 

The island may be quieter than its neighbors, but it doesn't lack amenities or things to do. There are great walking and cycling paths near the house. Sightseeing includes a lighthouse that dates back to 1880 (with 240 steps to its top balcony), several small museums, and two working windmills. A great excursion, especially for families, is a trip by boat to Robbeneiland, a sandbank off the coast near Hollum where you can catch seals sunbathing.

Cars are not required on the island as there are three bus lines that operate between the four main villages, and there are several bike rental companies. 

LOCATION

Ameland Island, The Netherlands. Nearest airport: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS). A ferry service runs from Holwerd on the mainland at least six times a day, and takes 45 minutes.
