An Atmospheric 16th-Century Croatian Castle on the Adriatic

Calling all Game of Thrones aficionados! This holiday rental is a restored 16th-century Croatian castle that served as the set for the city of Braavos in the beloved HBO fantasy series. Dragons might not be roaming the premises, but this mighty fortress is a sight to behold. Standing impressively along the Adriatic Sea with picturesque views of nearby Split and the bay of Kastela, the ancient structure exudes a calm strength and fairytale charm.
 
The castle’s stoney facade reflects majestically off the surrounding water, gleaming with a staunch history. Its original stone structure has endured the test of time with the authentic arched windows and limestone walls preserved, while the interiors have undergone a thoughtful restoration. Contemporary furnishings, decor, and amenities populate the cozy yet spacious rooms, featuring a fresh aquatic charm. Its white, brown stone, and warm wood color palette is playfully punctuated by bright blue accents in the form of velvet throw pillows and decorative vases. 
 
A lovely terrace with potted flowers and a shady Tamaris tree sits just before the castle’s front door. Guests are coaxed to sip a morning coffee from the wicker sofas overlooking the harbor, where charming boats and buoys bob peacefully in the sun. 
 
The Watercastle House is simultaneously quaint and prodigious. Its modern makeover expertly manages to honor its past while providing 21st-century luxury.

Built in the first half of the 16th century by Benedictine nuns for protection from the Turks that were pillaging the region, this villa for rent in Croatia sits right at the water's edge, with the Adriatic lapping at its base.

Donated to them all the way back in 1078 by King Zvonimir, there is still an ancient church and monastery that share the small island with picture-perfect views of Kastela bay and the city.

A fortress of imposing limestone, the exteriors have the patina and romance of history, while the interiors are warm and welcoming with, arched windows, wood floors and a light, contemporary update. The living room has a wood burner to keeps things cozy with an all-in-one dining area and fully-equipped kitchen.

Up a charming staircase are the two double bedrooms and bathrooms that can accommodate up to four guests, one of which is a mezzanine loft.

The flowering terrace is the spot to dine at the water's edge and soak in the atmospheric charms of this historic home.

The castle is ideally located within walking distance of the best sandy beaches and the circuit along the shore of the city's bay, famous for its authenticity and romantic castles. 

With the Dalmatian mountains as a backdrop and the sparkling Adriatic laid out before it, UNESCO designated Split is Croatia's majestic "second city" situated along the central Dalmatian archipelago. Along with nearby Trogir, its history and beauty are musts for a visit to the region. The 4th-century Diocletian's palace should be familiar to Game of Thrones fans and the Dominus cathedral and bell tower 60 meters above the city is the spot for breathtaking views.

The ferries and water taxis are the best way to explore the labyrinth of islands and coastal waterways (there are many yacht services also if you happen to have that kind of scratch). Schedules are primarily arranged to accommodate the native islanders and run more frequently in the summer months. 

Hvar is a compact town on an even smaller island off shore that is packed with historic character and remnants of long ago fortifications and invasion. With traffic free marble streets and wide promenades, it's the perfect town to walk and enjoy the sparkling harbor.
