The Queen's Highway coastline takes you past the dazzling five-star resorts and some of the island's best beaches including Hapuna and Mauna Kea to old Kona and Captain Cook. Kona is a bustling resort town and home to the Florentine inspired Queens Palace (The only official royal residence in the US!). Many of the provincial turn of the century homesteads and remnants of early plantations and coffee processing plants are scattered along the road as a lasting reminder of Big Island life and identity. Historic Hilo can be reached in just under two hours' drive on the interior Saddle Road or head through the southern route past the archeological site of the City of Refuge in Honauna. North Kohala and Waiamea lie just over an hour north with a charming and eclectic mix of historic plantation-style towns of art galleries, cafes and the stunning Pololu Valley at road's end. It's a great stopover on your way to Honokaa and the magnificent Waipio Valley in the historic Hamakua district.  Head up the Belt Road and into the treetop rainforests of Volcanoes National Park at Mauna Loa or the sometimes snow-covered landscape of Mauna Kea where you truly can ski or snowboard in paradise.   LOCATION Kona, Hawaii. Nearest Airport: Kona International Airport (20 Minutes)   BEST TIME TO VISIT: Tropical and warm year round, the Big Island features all but two of the world's recognized micro-climates depending on the area. Fall can get a bit rainy near Kona but is rarely a wash out. Winter months are a bit cooler in the evenings, so bring a jacket. The farm is located in the Kona Coffee Belt at about 1200 feet above sea level. The elevation provides a comfortable retreat from the hotter beach temperatures.

 Located within the prime coffee growing mountains above Kona, this beautifully designed farmhouse was constructed by an architect and his musician wife who fell in love with the area and worked for years to conceive and perfect it.The simple architectural design is derived from ancient Hawaiian structures, historic coffee shacks, and the Zen aesthetic of the homes built by Japanese immigrant farmers.Using indigenous building materials of lava rock and locally-harvested o'hia wood for the &#34;bones&#34; of the home, the remainder is composed of concrete, teak, and metal roofing with handcrafted copper pipe for fixtures and accents. Much of the copper and steel were shipped in and assembled on-site and the entire home was designed using the &#34;Golden Mean&#34; dimensions found in nature. The architecture is open and designed to blend indoors and outdoors seamlessly.If you're looking for a Kona upcountry experience, we highly recommend this unique home. It's on agricultural land, surrounded by jungle, where you'll hear frogs, chickens, roosters, tropical birds, and even an occasional wild hog. (If you're a light sleeper, though, you may want to consider a different property!)

The lush and spacious yard is a great place to kick back with a mai tai and wonder at the magnificent mountain views. You may even catch a glimpse of back of the Diamond Head volcanic cone and the coastal waters. On rainy days you get the chance to see nature's fertilizer at work, activating the rich, green vegetative landscape of Hawaii that it's famous for. Our advice? Sit under the outdoor umbrella of your teak dining table with your partner and soak in the show. &#34;A single gentle rain makes the grass many shades greener,&#34; said Henry David Thoreau. (Just imagine waking up here the next day).This vacation rental in Honolulu has one bedroom and one bathroom. If you're here for nature, consider a visit to the 200-acre Lyon Arboretum, just eight minutes away by car and featuring 6,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants, plus seven miles of hiking trails. Waikiki is 15 minutes away, and you'll want a car to explore and discover the unlimited recreational adventures to be had on Oahu.  Otherworldly but entirely organic and innovative in form, this famed holiday home in Hawaii was the result of a highly improbable and daring adventure in architecture. We love the unusual translucent forms, the natural island materials used in its construction and the fascinating story behind it all.Designed and hand built in 1962 by budding architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg for the McCormick Spice family, this stunningly unusual holiday home in Hawaii is a unique vacation experience set in lush tropical gardens above the Kona coast. Featured in Architectural Digest, The New York Times, HGTV, The Travel Channel and many more, it's part of an unforgettable slice of Hawaii's history. Set on over an acre with gorgeous views of the Pacific, the compound is very private with staggered outdoor terraces and gardens surrounding the striking structural forms.The project was the dream of an eccentric McCormick heiress who's passion for adventure and Polynesian culture led her to enlist Kellogg to create a work of art in harmony with the natural environment. A pioneer of organic architecture, Kellogg's life's work would expand the vocabulary of structure beyond any buildings that had yet been conceived. Constructed of fiberglass with metal work by former Lloyd Wright collaborator William Slatton who forged the gate and spires, and stained glass by James Hubbell, the home was entirely hand crafted. Falling into severe neglect in the intervening years, the home was rescued and lovingly restored by artist Beth McCormick (niece of the original owner).

Thought to be a place of healing by the local Hawaiians, the 1,800-acre park is home to some of the world’s most unique plant species. Don’t miss the professional cliff divers who put on a show that is a must-see. Designed by its owner and personally constructed by hand over eight years, this breezy island getaway lets you live immersed in Hawaii’s tropical, volcanic landscape. The home’s starring spaces are those that open via oversized doors. The bedroom has four floor-to-ceiling windows and automated roller shades, the lanai living area is enclosed by 10-foot steel rolling doors, and the bedroom and kitchen both feature bifold doors that create a seamless indoor/outdoor living experience.
The sensuous bathroom features a double vanity sink space with defogging mirrors, a walk-in rain shower and deep soaking tub. Russet woods combine with rich, lava-toned interiors, and the home’s outdoor space is surrounded by ferns, palms and succulents, revealing the dark volcanic soil characteristic of the area.
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
Adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii’s Big Island, this home makes a great base for exploring the high altitude, active volcanoes of Kilauea and Mauna Loa. The park extends from sea level to 13,680 feet and is considered one of the world’s most unique geological and cultural landscapes. A designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park contains two of the five volcanoes that make up Hawaii and is a sacred space for indigenous Hawaiians. 
There are four parts of the park. The summit of Kilauea offers great views into Kaluapele, the summit caldera, the drive down Chain of Craters Road within the park offers dramatic coastal views and passes rugged lava fields, Mauna Loa is the world’s largest active volcano, and Kahuku is a remote part of the park that’s home to traditional Hawaiian heritage and cattle ranching. The Nahuku Lava tube is some 500 years old, and is almost 600 feet long and up to 20 feet tall. The space is lit during daylight hours so that walking its length is possible. Hikes through the park meander through miles and miles of varied landscapes, from lava fields and scalded places to deserts, rainforests and sea cliffs. 
Stargazing in the region’s dark night skies is also a draw to the area, and the region is relatively rural, with coffee farms and ranching operations in the surrounding hills. Black sand beaches are also a major draw to the area, and the Kona Coast is dramatically beautiful and rugged.

Eight years in the making, this handbuilt home in Hawaii is named for its location minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. Ten-foot doors roll open on the screened lanai with its fire pit, plus two bifold glass doors in the kitchen and bedroom let the island’s natural beauty inside, creating a connection to the lush outdoors.

<h2 id="puremolokaiavintageislandlodgeexperience">Pure Molokai: A Vintage, Island Lodge Experience</h2>
A lodge was built in the distinctive style of noted architect C.W. Dickey in 1935, and is an example of Hawaii’s “Golden Age” of architecture. The working certified biodynamic and organic ranch’s architectural showpiece is its majestic great room, a 1,350sqft space furnished with Balinese and Hawaiian wood and textiles, rough-cut wood beams a lava-rock fireplace, a library and sitting areas. The classic 1930s-era space exudes authentic Hawaiian charm. A commercial kitchen and generous shaded lanai (of about 800 square feet) are attached to the lodge. In front of the main building, a large yoga deck overlooks a lawn that sweeps down, offering ocean views. A pool nestles behind the building, with lush vegetation all around. Landscaping with native plants was designed by Leland Miyano.
Twelve bedrooms with private bathrooms wrap around the lodge's landscape. The lodge can accommodate up to 30 guests and hosts intimate gatherings, retreats, hunts, and workshops. The Lodge requires a private chef for seasonal, farm-to-table, island inspired meals (a non-negotiable $195.00 + tax, per person, per day.) Lodge bedrooms are not rented individually, though the property’s main wing can be rented for smaller groups of up to 14 guests. Main wing rooms are either queen (room 1), full (rooms 3 and 5) or set with a pair of full beds (rooms 2 and 4). An annex to the lodge offers double twin rooms (rooms 7-12) and one room furnished with two full beds (annex room 6). Room interiors are cheery and comfortable, with wooden poster or canopy beds topped with flowery or patterned bedspreads, and clean-lined, tiled bathrooms.

The property is a great place to unwind and unplug, immersed in the beauty of lush tropical forest, starry skies and wild ocean, with hiking trails for onsite recreation. The property is a short drive from the black sand beaches of the Hālawa Valley. Green pastures run up from coastal fishponds, sea cliffs tower above the ranch, and the property is dedicated to the stewardship and conservation of the land. On-site work focuses on reforestation, sustainable cultivation, beekeeping, agroforestry, and slow food and renewable energy projects. Exclusive guided wild Molokai axis deer hunts are offered and include meat processing. Grassfed and grass-finished beef also graze the pastures in a sustainable rotational practice, and the farm produces biodynamic and certified organic dried bananas, fresh frozen Hawaiian ‘awa root, honey and a wide variety of fresh produce. Conservation projects on the site include creating a safe harbor agreement to protect Hawaii’s state bird, the endangered Nene Goos, and working with environmental groups to keep the property’s 10 private miles of coastline plastic free. A native plant propagation project works towards the creation of a forest of foods that are close genetic relatives of Hawaii’s original plants, and farm-to-table meals and produce shares are possible at the lodge as well.
