Two Scandinavian-Inspired Cabins in the Vermont Woods
These two cabins, nestled into a forested 20-acre plot, were inspired by Scandinavian design, making them an unsual discovery in rural Vermont. The weekend retreat of a Dutch couple who live in the US, they are a labor of love, created to bring a sense of European design to this highly-desirable east coast destination.
The cabins are great places to wake up in year round, with large picture windows in each room offering views of the trees, with resident chipmunks jumping from branch to branch.
The Chalet, which was completed in June 2020, is 1,700sqft in size and suitable for up to six guests. Its Nordic influence is on full display, with a white and blond wood palette, polished concrete floors, 22ft ceilings and windows that flood the space with natural light. The large living room is simply furnished with a comfy couch, a Vitra Slow Chair, a Moroccan rug and a wood stove. Pick a book from the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, or set up a movie on the projector, then snuggle up as the nights close in.
In warmer months, there's plenty to do in the garden, with its Weber grill, lounge chairs, hammock, firepit, and warm rain shower. There is also a herb garden, and you can gather fresh eggs from the resident chickens. Don't worry, the outside comes alive in winter too, with great places to sled all around the property.
The smaller Cabin, built in February 2021, is an open-plan 400sqft studio space for two guests, immersed in the surrounding forest. It has tons of privacy, with outdoor seating, a firepit and barbecue.

Both of the bathrooms in the house have views across the woods, heated floors and fixtures from Duravit and Grohe. The kitchen has a Bertazzoni range, generously-sized soapstone countertops, Hawkins New York crockery, as well as a dining table for up to eight guests.
The smaller Cabin is a studio space with a heated terrazzo floor, a dining area, a well-equipped kitchen, a queen-sized bed, a bathroom with rain shower, and a tiny wood stove.
Cell service is spotty, but there is very fast wifi, which works well for business meetings and watching movies.
