Classical Beauty Inside and Out
The romance and grandeur of this luxury villa in Portugal has been thoughtfully preserved with a stylish and respectful restoration that balances past and present in a seamless adaptation. We love the original architectural features, the personal design touches and the amazing rooftop pool and lounge.
Located in the heart of Olhao’s old town, this luxury villa in Portugal was originally built in the late 19th century as a classical gentleman's residence. With some elements dating back to the 16th century, the principal building has a storied past and was commissioned by a local dignitary and town hero of sorts whose plaque remains on the facade to this day. Discovered and restored in 2016 by a London-based professional couple, the town and the residence were in decline and overdue for a renaissance.
The structure retains its classical beauty inside and out, with stunning original architectural features including a soaring stained-glass cupola, interior courtyards and graceful arched ceilings that have been cleverly and carefully adapted to modern living. The restoration preserves and honors its historic significance while introducing contemporary design, comforts and understated style.
The three-story house includes a large entry hall that opens into the living room with fireplace and a library that opens out to a central courtyard. There is a games room and a meditation room and a large state-of-the-art kitchen that leads out to a dining terrace that seats up to 28. With an additional industrial kitchen and wine cellar dining room on the ground floor, the house is well designed for entertaining and events all year round. With 12 en-suite bedrooms that can sleep up to 24 guests, the house is ideal for families or groups traveling together.
The interiors are awash in neutral colors and materials for a soothing sense of ease and peace with a designer's eye for detail. There are multiple terraces and lounge areas as well as a spectacular (and rare) rooftop pool and bar all your own.
Designed to provide luxury and hospitality along with a sense of comfort, privacy and escape, this vast and elegant residence is a rare find.

AROUND
Dating back to Roman times, Olhao, just east of Faro, is the Algarve's main fishing port where the extensive waterways and coastal bounty remain a vibrant and sustainable part of the local community. Don't miss the the daily fish market (designed by Gustave Eiffel) and the Saturday market along the waterfront (which also supplies the many local restaurants) for some of the best seafood in the world. The old town has risen from disrepair and neglect in recent years and has undergone a cultural renaissance of sorts, attracting a creative and artsy crowd that have set about restoring the architectural mix of Moorish influences and the grandeur of the early manor houses.
The area has thankfully escaped the more touristy beach destinations and crowds although there is over 125 miles of coastline and beaches just a short drive away. Nearby Ria Formosa national park is a lovely and protected stretch of wetlands and lagoons that features an ever-changing diversity of flora and fauna and extends over 35 miles. The outlying islands of Armona, Culatra, Farol and Deserta make great days trips and can be reached by ferry or water taxi. Blessedly free of cars, each has subtly different character and vibes that echo a slower, simpler time and all feature pristine, nearly deserted beaches.
