Trendy barefoot boutiques, a lively gallery scene and a handful of cute cafés now line the streets of Comporta and its surrounding beaches, though the region remains exceedingly low key and lesser known than rival European beach destinations.
Orange trees, rice paddies and coastal wetlands make up the landscape along with dramatic beachfronts where soaring bluffs in a pale terracotta tone rise from the sand, backed by windswept pine trees. The nearby Troia peninsula is a favorite spot of kite and wind surfers. The Sado Estuary, with its vast natural wetland reserve that boasts flamingos, otters, dolphins, and more than 250 types of protected birds, is also a quick drive from the home, through small fishing communities on stilts.
The Atlantic beaches nearby include Praia dos Brejos and Praia do Carvalhal. The village of Comporta is walkable distance from the house, with its markets, grocers, and services, and its charming, sand-dusted streets lined with whitewashed buildings and orange trees, all set amid the rice paddies.
