This 18th-century masia in the heart of the Costa Brava was recently restored, creating a tranquil retreat surrounded in nature that's close to the best beaches, towns and markets of the region. With a large garden, a generously-sized pool, and capacity for up to 10 guests, it's ideal for families and other groups.

A masia is a rural building that's native to Catalonia, with the ground floor traditionally used for animals, the first floor for family, and produce stored on the top floor or attic. Distinctive architectural features include barrel-vaulted ceilings on the lower floors, lintel entrances, and wood-beamed upper floors. This home retains the essence of the traditional farmhouse by preserving these original features, including a vaulted entrance hall with a centuries-old oil press, and exterior stone walls that glow in the sunshine.

Updates have been made with a light touch. Colors are subtle, large windows allow for copious light, and the furnishings, if they say anything at all, it's that they've been around for a long time and have a story to tell.

For the past five decades, this villa for rent in Spain served as a meeting place for one family's children, grandchildren and friends. Today, it extends the same warm welcome to all of its guests.

This home sleeps up to 10 guests. The ground floor has two bedrooms, one double, and one that sleeps three and also serves as a playroom or work area. Upstairs are three suites, with spacious bathrooms, plus a roof terrace with views across the orchards to the church beyond. There's a very well-equipped modern kitchen, connected to a dining room that looks out over the grounds.

The large garden is filled with honeysuckle, white oleanders, olive and cypress trees, birdsong, and the chimes of church bells. Dine under a century-old fig tree on a hot summer day, read a book in the hammock looking out across the garden over the rooftops to the Gavarres mountains, or bake a cake with the garden's plentiful apricots, if you are lucky enough to visit in June.

AROUND

This villa for rent in Spain is located in the heart of the Costa Brava, near the village of Mont-ras, at the base of the Gavarres mountains. You'll find it between between Palafrugell and Palamos, about 40 minutes from Girona and 80 minutes from Barcelona.

The quiet, picturesque roadways of the region lead out into the Baix Empordá and beautiful coves and beaches, including Cala de Aiguablava, Far de Sant Sebastián, Llafranc village, and Calella de Palafrugell, some of which are accessible by bicycle from the house.

Settled around the tiny rocky bays, the former fishing villages give you a glimpse of the sleepy waterfront culture without the glitz of neighboring resorts. There are also many summer festivals to check out with their Gegants and popular dances as well as the musical festivals of Perellada and Cap Roig, and the colorful fireworks in the town of La Bisbal.

Bordered to the north by the beautiful and protected Garrotxa region, and to the south by the Gavarres National Park, you're surrounded by some of Catalonia’s most breathtaking natural and coastal beauty.
