<p>A stunning haven for up to eight, with three double bedrooms plus a sofa bed, this thoroughly updated former fish farm is nestled among the waters of spring-fed ponds. A striking modern retreat, the property now stands as a contemporary lake cabin getaway, with interiors crafted of locally sourced oak, masterful ironwork, and formed concrete. Architectural furnishings such as vintage Nordic armchairs and brutalist seats join artistic installations, such as a wall collage of fishing boxes.</p>
<p>The ground floor is home to the common spaces, a large living room with an open fireplace, a sleek kitchen with a bar island and dining room, a laundry room, bath and toilet. Head up half a level to a TV room with a double sofa bed, a bedroom, and a bath with separate WC. Upstairs, two more bedrooms offer plenty of space to spread out, and there’s room to roam outdoors, with a large fenced garden, two furnished terraces, a plancha, pétanque court, a wood-fired Nordic hot tub, and pontoons leading into the lake’s waters.</p>

<p>This contemporary retreat offers full immersion in nature and a woodsy landscape that changes with the seasons. It is a great base for wildlife watching—hares, rabbit, squirrel, fox, birds and a variety of aquatic life are daily passersby. Bring your boat or board and get out on the water, or dare to jump in for a swim off the pontoon. Outdoorsy types will love canoeing on the River Lesse, cycling the Points-Noeuds network of trails, visiting the Eau d’Heure Lakes, or golfing at Rougemeont.</p>
<p>For urbanites, nearby Namur is the capital of the Wallonia region, and it's where the Meuse and Sambre rivers join. The city’s medieval fortress offers seven kilometers of underground passages, and its gardens and enclosures have great views. Dinant offers a city getaway against dramatic cliffs and a fortified Citadel with sweeping views.</p>
<p>The gite is located in the Molignée Valley area of the Ardenne region, a land with a rich gastronomical culture and dozens of medieval castles and abbeys. Visit the Warnant snail farm, a place of heliciculture, which produces delicious escargots to bathe in parsley butter. There’s a fish farm in Annevoie that produces thousands of trout annually in pisiculture ponds, both great washed down with a local wine from the region under the A.O.C. Côte de Sambre et Meuse.</p>

These spellbinding, transparent villas, set 12 meters apart, share the same footprint, each offering a bedroom, bath and galley kitchen behind their seamless, floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The crystalline panes in each villa are contrasted by three beautifully striated walls of solidly rammed clay that was excavated on site. Sharp angles of steel and concrete jut from the leafy jungle canopy, the metal creating the dramatic rooflines that shade the concrete platforms designed as floating patios. The concrete landings are set with dining and lounging furniture, creating the pagoda’s sole living room outside the glass. Both gleaming structures feature infinity pools, and both showcase the use of concrete indoors, where the mass forms built-in seating, bedside tables and platforms, benches, and countertops. Each villa’s interior varies, designed to reflect the location’s unique energy as experienced by the architects at the time of construction.These two villas are brought to us by the multi-award-winning Formafatal Studio in Prague, whose other homes in Costa Rica are also featured here.AROUNDThese twin villas jut sharply from a jungled hillside, one kilometer above Playa Hermosa, on Costa Rica’s south Pacific coast, overlooking the Whale's Tail, the main attraction at Marino Ballena National Park. A world-class surf spot, Playa Hermosa is some six kilometers from Uvita/Bahia Bellena and about 10 kilometers from Dominical. The national parks at Corcovado and Chirripo are about two hours’ drive away, and Manuel Antonio National Park is reachable in about an hour. <p>These twin villas jut sharply from a jungled hillside, one kilometer above Playa Hermosa, on Costa Rica’s south Pacific coast, overlooking the Whale's Tail, the main attraction at Marino Ballena National Park. A world-class surf spot, Playa Hermosa is some six kilometers from Uvita/Bahia Bellena and about 10 kilometers from Dominical. The national parks at Corcovado and Chirripo are about two hours’ drive away, and Manuel Antonio National Park is reachable in about an hour. Toucans, monkeys, parrots and condors are visible without ever leaving the glassy shelters, and the villas offer privileged perches for whale watching in season and the occasional show of bioluminescent plankton by night.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Comprised of mangrove forests, deserted sands, and thriving coral reefs, the area’s beaches are mostly wide stretches backed by rocky coves. A former fishing village, Trancoso is located in the Bahia region of Brazil, a slightly off-the-beaten-path destination bathed by dense rainforest and surrounded by miles of beaches. The town is famed for its charming quadrado, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site, with its whitewashed wedding chapel and colorful houses surrounding the square. The town became a favored hippie destination in the late 1960s, yet today the town is more hipster than hippie, its stylish cobbled streets and candy-colored houses increasingly popular with international trendsetters. Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean, Trancoso was originally settled by Jesuit priests in the late 1500s, and it is still pristine and relatively undeveloped today. The nearby villages of Arraial d’Ajuda and Caralva are worth a day trip, and one of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches, Espelho, featuring remarkably warm swimming lagoons formed at low tide by the coral reefs, is easily accessible nearby.</p>

A swimming pool pours from its intersection, lined with loungers and a rich wood staircase leading into the tropical landscape, and its impressive central palapa is held up by sturdy timbers and topped by solar panels. A cook and two housekeepers are on site daily. </p>

Earth-toned, brut and boxy, this villa for rent in Portugal elevates the standard rural home to sophisticated new levels. Designed around a central courtyard with a tiled dining area, the modern hacienda was built to turn inwards, with all its rooms leading towards or into the spare central patio. The patio space serves as a cool, intimate oasis at the heart of the home. <h2 id="dolomitemountainhigh">Dolomite Mountain High</h2>
<p>“Anders” means “differently,” and owner and chef Andreas Plattner has indeed “done differently” by making out-of-the-ordinary changes to his family’s former, 50-room mountain hotel. The one-time Hotel Aurora has been downsized but decidedly leveled up as Anders Inn, reincarnated as a more refined, high mountain refuge of contemporary design and culinary modernism.</p>
<p>Built of brushed spruce on the outside, the chalet leaves tradition behind with its flat cement roof and sculptural form tucked into the Plose range of the Italian Dolomites. A slightly cantilevered platform opens up the strong, slope side construction to its rugged, rocky terrain, anchored front-and-center by the jagged and solitary Peitlerkofel peak. Floor-to-ceiling windows in each of the inn’s seven suites frame the cinematic alpine display, a sea of evergreen forest extending for miles and shape-shifting cloud formations moving at eye level. Interiors are unfussy, with walls clad in natural spruce, cement floors, and soft simple bed linens keeping the focus on the outdoors. Lower-level suites are apartment style, with living areas and kitchens as well as garden access. Upstairs lodgings are more intimate, with epic views from bed and in-room glazed saunas.</p>
<p>The heart of the thoroughly remodeled inn is its open parlor, a generous living area where the bar, restaurant and a roaring fireplace intersect, offering guests a front-row seat to the mountains. The restaurant’s food is rooted in the region, and the kitchen is helmed by native son and trained chef Andreas, who presents a menu of local, alpine specialties married with Mediterranean flair. Mint for tea and culinary herbs are hand-harvested from the on-site garden, open to guests. Fruit is collected from local suppliers. And guests can enjoy the restaurant, special culinary-themed evenings, or cook for themselves from pre-ordered meal kits and the always open honesty bar. Breakfast is included.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>A high-altitude playground set at 1,850 meters in Italy’s dramatic South Tyrol, the inn is built into a steep slope of the Plose mountain range in the Dolomites, with the Peitlerkofel mountain rising cinematically in the foreground. A destination for winter sports enthusiasts, the inn is ski in/ski out, with some 43 kilometers of slopes, ranging from beginner to expert runs, right out the front door and one of the Dolomites longest ski runs, the Trametsch, a part of the local Plose Ski Resort (Brixen Dolomites).</p>
<p>While perhaps best known as a winter wonderland (snowshoeing, sledding, skating, etc. are also available), the Plose range offers year-round adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. Guests can store bikes in addition to skis. Stocked backpacks are available to hikers attempting the area’s many challenging treks, which are also available right out the door in true hike in/hike out style. And Anders stocks yoga mats for winding down time.</p>
<p>The town of Bressanone (Brixen, in German) is less than a half hour’s drive from the property. As the region’s oldest community, the town is known for its magnificent architecture, ranging from its Baroque cathedral, to its Romanesque Chiostro di Bressanone covered in medieval frescoes, to its Renaissance art museum, the Diocesan Museum.</p>
