Set on a hilltop overlooking the city, this strikingly preserved 19th-century library has been converted into a private home with a stylish mixture of design themes. Within the heart of the Collserola nature park, the house offers amazing views to both sides of the mountain and panoramic views of the city from the east side.Designed and built by one of Catalonia's most prominent authors, lawyers and adventurers, the building is full of histories and anecdotes linked to his time here. Pairing the classically elegant Beaux Arts architecture with a cool Nordic minimalism, the building was adapted for family life by the owners with the help of architect Carol Iborra. The imposing facade gives way to stately interiors, with the main reading room's soaring ceilings anchored by a lovely ornate fireplace making it an ideal central space for social gatherings. A studio space is available for guests and has been completely modernized in cool Scandinavian white and wood. The one double ensuite bedroom has its own entrance with space for two guests, opening out to expansive gardens with a pool. The exterior spaces are nestled into the forested hillside in a private and relaxed setting. Preserving and sharing the cultural and historic heritage of Catalonia, the couple opens their doors to guests who will appreciate the experience of being in touch with history and are invited to feel at home.     <p>Biblioteca Almirall was once the private library of Valentì Almirall, an impassioned figure of the Renaixença. Today, it is the beloved home and life project of a fascinating Colombian-Norwegian family. Martha and Øyvin fell in love with this early Beaux Arts library in 1999 and dedicated the following 18 years of their lives to its careful restoration. </p><p>Along with their children, the family moved from room to room within the building as the restoration progressed, growing up with their home. And, as everything came together in 2011, the family set off on a 14-month trip around the world and returned filled with sights and sounds, their taste for adventure and appetite for life stronger than ever. Their home is now open to the world as a place of continuous travel, shared ideas, and moments for the books. To share this extraordinary space with guests, they offer a studio apartment for overnight stays.</p>

The nearby villages of Fão and Barcelos feature local markets and shops where you can try the traditional fare and the historical religious city of Braga and UNESCO city of Guimarães are all within a forty-minute drive. Famous for its medieval architecture, the UNESCO city of Porto is also the home to a vibrant modernist movement and the famed School of Architecture that launched Pritzker Prize-winning graduates Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura. Stroll old town Santa Catarina street for shopping, traditional Fado music, and the acclaimed Cafe Majestic along with Batalha Square where most of the city’s important cultural events and shows take place. <h2 id="anartistsplayfulguestapartmentinchania">An Artist’s Playful Guest Apartment in Chania</h2>
<p>Behind its door marked exuberantly with squiggling blue waves, this urban island getaway offers a playful escape made splashy and sunny by Alexandra Manousakis, whose eponymous brand’s styling is on vivid display throughout along with her artwork. The 75-square-meter two-person studio’s graphic floor is offset by bright, mural-like paintings, full scale versions of the abstract, often satirical forms and symbols that enliven Manousakis’ ceramics and canvases, telling her distinctive Greek-American creative story.</p>
<p>Textural accents in her trademark style adorn walls, and the open-plan apartment’s furnishings give a nod to mid-century modern styling, with bright blocks of color on walls and textiles. A spacious bathroom with a soaking tub gives off all the right tropical island vibes in the heart of this small island city. The apartment has a full kitchen, bathroom, central air, Cocomat Bed, Wifi and on-site parking. </p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Wake up steps from the Mediterranean Sea in the Koum Kapi area of Chania in Crete. Join the swimmers at the beach across the way, or walk 10 minutes along the coast to the Venetian Harbor. Located on the quieter part of the coast, you are conveniently in downtown Chania, a port city on Crete’s northwest coast. Featuring a collision of Venetian and Turkish architecture mixed with traditional Greek island styling, Chania is known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, a buzzy waterfront zone alive with cafes, boutiques, gelato shops and local craft studios. Chania’s lighthouse in its current form dates from the Egyptian occupation of Crete in the early 19th century, though the original harbor lighthouse dates back to the Venetian era. The tower stands 21 meters high and can be seen from seven miles away, and the spit it occupies offers beautiful views.</p>
<p>The city’s Municipal Market is filled with traditional shops selling local Cretan products—cheese, produce, olives, honey and local raki. There are several museums in town: the Archeological Museum, the Nautical Museum of Crete/Maritime Museum, and the Folklore Museum of the Chania. Old tanneries found in the Tambakaria area on the rocky eastern side of Chania are unique to the city, stone buildings with tile roofs built very close together and connected by steep, sea-going passages that were once frequented by leather producers who relied on the brackish water to soften their hides. Some processing houses still produce leather goods and Chania is home to a Leather Market. Knives are another Chania original, the knife makers lining Sifaka street once upon a time, and traditional blades still available at the Armenis shop.</p>
<p>Beachgoers will love Falasarna, a long quiet beach, and other impressive sands include Balos and Elafonissi. Wine lovers should grab a tour and tasting at the property owner’s family winery, one of Greece’s leading bio wineries that has been growing organic grapes since 1997. It’s about 15 minutes outside of town in the village of Vatolakkos. Or head out on a day trip to the Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest at 16 kilometers, passable on foot in about six hours. For a shorter hike, visit the narrow Imbros Gorge, and then cool off with a swim at Fragokastelo Beach.</p>

<p>The studio is attached to the main house but has a separate entrance, accessible from front patio and driveway. <p>Located in a quiet neighborhood in Ojai, California, a 1.5-hour drive from LA, the house is about 40 minutes from Santa Barbara, too. But it offers a decidedly quieter, small town atmosphere in a lush valley crossed by dozens of orange orchards and avocado and oak trees. The house itself offers an acre of mature fruit trees and mountain views. Ojai’s East End neighborhood is known for its rural-ish style, where working citrus ranches intermingle with architectural homes and artistic cottages. Hiking trails wend through the area, though it’s only about a five-minute drive to Ojai’s downtown, home to boutique shopping, cafes, markets, and galleries. The sandy beaches of LA and Santa Barbara area are a quick half hour to 45-minute drive from the house.</p>
<p>Set on the sacred indigenous lands of the Chumash People, Ojai has generationally drawn people to it for its energy and sanctity. Ojai’s history as a spiritual sanctuary begins with the Chumash tribe, a group of hunter-gatherers who inhabited this part of Southern California millennia ago, and it continues today, transformed by early European settlers who created the Spanish Colonial Revival styled downtown. A “build it and they will come” dynamic prevailed in the lush valley surrounded by the Topatopa Mountains, and by the late 1920s, Ojai had become a destination for deep thinkers, modern philosophers, theosophists, artists, and Hollywood stars seeking peace and alternative lifestyles. Settle into designer furnishings by Jorge Zalszupin, Guilherme Wentz, Vinicius Siega, and Jader Almeida, or cop a spot amid the plants on the mural-splashed patio. Neon lights and vivid pop art illuminate the space and voice commands control the lighting and privacy. Designed as an intimate spot for close couples or singles who don’t mind a transparent, in-room bathroom, albeit one that’s urban, sleek and stylish, the studio is a hi-tech, high-design haven. A raw wood galley kitchen and built-in office island offset the plush queen bed and lounge space.</p>

<p>Located on a quiet street off the main thoroughfare, but only a few minutes’ walk to both the beach and the nearest metro, this is a sweet spot for Ipanema beachgoers and digital nomads who will find plenty of spaces for both work and play. The beach at Ipanema is every bit the Bossa Nova dreamscape the classic song describes, and the songwriter Antônio Carlos Jobim once even lived in the same location as this newly built building, grabbing inspiration in the sands’ bronzed beauties. Ipanema Beach offers a vibrant mosaic of culture and flavor, with cafes and kaleidoscope markets, street music and vendors, and plenty of pulsating bars and clubs.</p>
<p>A waterfront bike path extends the full length of the dazzling beach, and the city’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain is visible from the building. The Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon has a five-mile circuit around it, for walking or cycling the wildlife-filled wetland. One vast arc of sun-soaked sand, Ipanema Beach is marked by posts that define certain sections of it. Post 9 is reputedly the spot for Rio’s prettiest of pretty people—a tangle of lithe, bronzed bodies of all shapes, forms, and sizes. A mecca for the city’s gay community, the beach was also once home to hippies, radicals and bohemians whose modern-day counterparts tend to congregate at the Ceméterio dos Elefantes.</p>
<p>Rio’s most popular surf spot is Arpoador, between Ipanema and Copacabana Beaches, and the Leblon section of the beach is the most family friendly. Post 10 is where the sporty types meet, a sand court site for pick-up volleyball matches and soccer games and <em>frescobol</em>, or beach tennis. Swim with caution all along the iconic sandy stretch as <em>Ipanema</em> is an indigenous term for “dangerous waters” and the ocean’s strong undertow and crashing waves are to be respected. Swim only in marked areas where the locals dive in.</p>

<p>A fifth-floor flat in the lively Latin Quarter, this quiet, open plan space hits all the high notes of a Paris apartment—wrought-iron-framed French window ledges overlooking romantic rooftops, a refined marble hearth and hardwood floors, an exposed ancient beam, and that artful French knack for decorating a space with a mix of antique and modern art, books, and <em>objets</em> that give it a certain <em>je ne sais quoi</em>.</p>
<p>A five-minute stroll to the Seine and Notre Dame, this 30sqm apartment is a romantic hideaway for two, tucked into the fifth floor of a classic residential building. Be like a Parisian and climb the stairs to the art-filled perch, decorated with an array of 19th- and 20th-century paintings, books, and Japanese-inspired furnishings.</p>
<p>A bed for two on patinaed wood floors looks out onto classic Parisian facades, opposite a curlicued balconette. The living area has an ancient marble hearth and art pieces from around the globe and through the eras. There’s a compact kitchenette for preparing market finds from the neighborhood's famed farmstands or for packing a picnic to enjoy in the Luxembourg Gardens, a 10-minute walk away.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Paris’s 5ème arrondissement, also known as the Latin Quarter for its scholarly history (Latin was the language of academia until nearly 1800), is home to the Sorbonne, l’Ecole des Beaux Arts, and several public Paris universities. A pure Left Bank district—the stomping grounds of academics and artists, students, and writers—the district’s narrow streets (Paris’ narrowest is in the area) are walkable, and the best thing to do is to wander curiously, or as the French put it: <em>flâner</em>. There are restaurants, cafes, and bakeries just downstairs, including a favorite, by-reservation French-Japanese restaurant, Kokoro. The youthful Boulevard Saint-Michel is one of the quarter’s busiest streets, a popular strip of restaurants, cafes, Greek food outlets, kabob stands, and dozens of sidewalk cafes packed with students. The independently owned Shakespeare &amp; Company bookstore, popularized by Hemingway in his memoir,<em>A Moveable Feast</em>, still greets a crowd daily, and the neighborhood’s streets range from the hushed and historical to the thronged and touristy. Slip away from the sightseeing crowds into the Jardin des Plantes, a 17th-century botanical garden with alpine, rose, winter and Art Deco garden sections. Entry to the lush locale is free, though the zoo and Natural History Museum on its grounds have an entry fee.</p>
<p>A must-visit gastronomical street nearby is Rue Mouffetard, a market street Julia Child made famous in the US. Its vibrant produce stands and fragrant bakeries are a great place to grab a picnic before heading to a quiet square or the banks of the nearby Seine. Paris’ Grand Mosquée’s garden makes for another beautiful, plant-filled food stop as the mosque’s interior is lush with greenery and lined with fountains and ponds. From the Pantheon to the churches of Saint-Etienne-du-Mont or Eglise Saint Severin, among others, the quarter is filled with historical monuments. Some date from Roman times, as the neighborhood is Paris’ oldest, the original Lutetia, and remains of the ancient arena/stadium are also in the area. The Latin Quarter is bordered by the Seine, the neighboring 6ème arrondissement and the Jardin du Luxembourg, and the Boulevard du Port-Royal to the east/southeast.</p>

Completed in 2016 the Museu Internacional de Escultura Contemporânea was designed by Álvaro Siza and Pritzker winner Souto de Moura and exhibits the town's modern art.The city is also devoted to gastronomy and authentic delights like the jesuítas limonetes, and traditional liquor Singeverga, and the local vinho verde unique to the area, served by most cafes and restaurants.The nearby Nossa Senhora da Assunção Mountains overlook the city and offer beautiful forests and hiking paths that lead to the Fervença Waterfalls. The area is also home to several interesting Bronze Age ruins including Castro do Monte Padrão, a citadel and village on the slopes of Nossa Senhora da Assunção that make for fascinating exploration.
