<p>Having left an indelible impact on Manhattan with his design of the interiors of the Time-Life Building, architect, sculptor and furniture designer Gerald Luss took to the woods, turning his sights to a more bucolic setting to create this holiday home in New York.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Luss' influential company Design for Business was a leader in the mid-20th century of business interiors and furniture design, ushering in the "Mad Men" era of mid-century style.&nbsp;Built for his family in 1952, the home was his first residential project, and still includes many original pieces designed by Mr. Luss, including the Time-Life 12-foot couch and coffee table.</p>
<p>Located in an area famous for some other mid-century luminaries, including Frank Lloyd Wright, the home readjusts the postwar corporate‐design genre into a chic and livable contemporary home.&nbsp;Artfully stylized, the home’s sleek and simple design highlights the enduring appeal of mid-century design and contemporary ideals, which the owners have faithfully preserved.</p>

<p>Having left an indelible impact on Manhattan with his design of the interiors of the Time-Life Building, architect, sculptor and furniture designer Gerald Luss took to the woods, turning his sights to a more bucolic setting to create this holiday home in New York.</p>

The property actually consists of two separate houses (the larger, main cottage and the smaller house) located next to each other in a single property on the edge of a quiet tidal bay in mid-coast Maine. The houses are architect-designed renovations of existing old buildings that function independently but are designed to be enjoyed together. Both houses share the same spectacular views of the sea and offshore islands and direct access to the water for swimming, fishing and kayaking.The cottage and guest house are located close to each other across the lawn. They offer privacy and shared facilities for two families sharing a vacation or for a couple with teenagers, grandparents or friends accompanying them. The guest cottage is also a great place to work on a project or take a nap while others are busy playing. The larger house has a second-floor master bedroom, bathroom and full laundry, and downstairs, an open-plan living room and large gourmet kitchen with dining table. Fishermen have been known to catch sea bass off the rocks.Martinsville is located on a small bay between Port Clyde and Tenants Harbor on the St George peninsula, and around its protected shores are houses, small farms, lobster shacks and historic waterfront homes. Locals picnic and swim at low tide on the sand flats nearby Drift-Inn Beach, and kayak and canoe on the waters of the bay. <p>Conceived as a place for play and rest,&nbsp; it's perfect for reading, dreaming, doing projects, cooking and eating, and playing on the grass in the summer sunshine after the long New York winters. Its close proximity to the shore is protected by large offshore islands which make the bay unusually protected and peaceful. Its tidal nature keeps out boats, and the changing tidal landscape turns everyone into birdwatchers. The uncluttered interiors of the rooms allow the light and sea views to be part of every moment spent here.</p>
<p>The design is classic seaside elegance - cool, whitewashed and bright, with a breezy and serene charm. The sea-facing porch and comfortable day-beds inside the houses invite guests to curl up with a good book – they have a great selection for book-lovers - or just look out over the bay where sea birds forage at low tide. We love its expressive period features and impeccable vintage style, and its recent addition to the&nbsp;National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the nation's historic places worthy of preservation, means we're not the only ones.  </p>
<p>The home, located in Lakeland, Florida, is part of the lesser-known Sarasota School of mid-century architecture. Developed and founded by famed architects Paul Rudolph, Gene Leedy and Mark Hampton, they were the vanguard of a thriving east coast architectural movement that closely mirrored the Case Study projects on the west coast.</p>
<p>Discovered by author and design authority Andrew Weaving, this heritage house at the epicenter of the region that is also home to the largest concentration of Frank Lloyd Wright structures in the world. The main room is warm and bright with lofty ceilings and exposed rafters and purlins that mimic the island's ancient grass shacks. Finished in teak with slide-away doors that open to the poolside lanai, the room opens on both sides allowing for cooling tropical trade winds. The living space is shared with the modern kitchen and a breakfast bar with a dining area that seats four overlooking the coffee orchard, the pool, and faces west for an unobstructed 180-degree view of the Pacific Ocean. The bedroom is cozy and bright with breezy slide away doors and teak shoji windows and a full bath that also opens to the pool area.   Serene and beautiful, this charming Hawaiian home is a great escape that in the words of the architect, &#34;was designed to last a hundred years&#34;.  THE BIG ISLAND'S RICH COFFEE GROWING DISTRICTPristine beaches, lush jungle, snow-capped peaks, and lunar deserts, this is an island of contrast and natural wonder with eleven out of the world's fourteen known climates. The Queen's Highway coastline takes you past the dazzling five-star resorts and some of the island's best beaches including Hapuna and Mauna Kea to old Kona and Captain Cook. Kona is a bustling resort town and home to the Florentine inspired Queens Palace (The only official royal residence in the US!). Many of the provincial turn of the century homesteads and remnants of early plantations and coffee processing plants are scattered along the road as a lasting reminder of Big Island life and identity. Historic Hilo can be reached in just under two hours' drive on the interior Saddle Road or head through the southern route past the archeological site of the City of Refuge in Honauna. North Kohala and Waiamea lie just over an hour north with a charming and eclectic mix of historic plantation-style towns of art galleries, cafes and the stunning Pololu Valley at road's end. It's a great stopover on your way to Honokaa and the magnificent Waipio Valley in the historic Hamakua district.  Head up the Belt Road and into the treetop rainforests of Volcanoes National Park at Mauna Loa or the sometimes snow-covered landscape of Mauna Kea where you truly can ski or snowboard in paradise.   LOCATION Kona, Hawaii. Nearest Airport: Kona International Airport (20 Minutes)   BEST TIME TO VISIT: Tropical and warm year round, the Big Island features all but two of the world's recognized micro-climates depending on the area. Fall can get a bit rainy near Kona but is rarely a wash out. Winter months are a bit cooler in the evenings, so bring a jacket. The farm is located in the Kona Coffee Belt at about 1200 feet above sea level. The elevation provides a comfortable retreat from the hotter beach temperatures.

    <p>Located within the prime coffee growing mountains above Kona, this beautifully designed farmhouse was constructed by an architect and his musician wife who fell in love with the area and worked for years to conceive and perfect it.</p><p>The simple architectural design is derived from ancient Hawaiian structures, historic coffee shacks, and the Zen aesthetic of the homes built by Japanese immigrant farmers.</p><p>Using indigenous building materials of lava rock and locally-harvested o'hia wood for the &#34;bones&#34; of the home, the remainder is composed of concrete, teak, and metal roofing with handcrafted copper pipe for fixtures and accents. Much of the copper and steel were shipped in and assembled on-site and the entire home was designed using the &#34;Golden Mean&#34; dimensions found in nature. The architecture is open and designed to blend indoors and outdoors seamlessly.</p><p>If you're looking for a Kona upcountry experience, we highly recommend this unique home. It's on agricultural land, surrounded by jungle, where you'll hear frogs, chickens, roosters, tropical birds, and even an occasional wild hog. (If you're a light sleeper, though, you may want to consider a different property!)</p>

The bedroom is cozy and bright with breezy slide away doors and teak shoji windows and a full bath that also opens to the pool area.   </p><p>Serene and beautiful, this charming Hawaiian home is a great escape that in the words of the architect, &#34;was designed to last a hundred years&#34;.  </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>THE BIG ISLAND'S RICH COFFEE GROWING DISTRICT</strong></p><p>Pristine beaches, lush jungle, snow-capped peaks, and lunar deserts, this is an island of contrast and natural wonder with eleven out of the world's fourteen known climates. The Queen's Highway coastline takes you past the dazzling five-star resorts and some of the island's best beaches including Hapuna and Mauna Kea to old Kona and Captain Cook. </p><p>Kona is a bustling resort town and home to the Florentine inspired Queens Palace (The only official royal residence in the US!). Many of the provincial turn of the century homesteads and remnants of early plantations and coffee processing plants are scattered along the road as a lasting reminder of Big Island life and identity. </p><p>Historic Hilo can be reached in just under two hours' drive on the interior Saddle Road or head through the southern route past the archeological site of the City of Refuge in Honauna. </p><p>North Kohala and Waiamea lie just over an hour north with a charming and eclectic mix of historic plantation-style towns of art galleries, cafes and the stunning Pololu Valley at road's end. It's a great stopover on your way to Honokaa and the magnificent Waipio Valley in the historic Hamakua district.  Head up the Belt Road and into the treetop rainforests of Volcanoes National Park at Mauna Loa or the sometimes snow-covered landscape of Mauna Kea where you truly can ski or snowboard in paradise.   </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>LOCATION </strong></p><p>Kona, Hawaii. Nearest Airport: Kona International Airport (20 Minutes)  </p><p> </p><p><strong>BEST TIME TO VISIT:</strong> Tropical and warm year round, the Big Island features all but two of the world's recognized micro-climates depending on the area. Fall can get a bit rainy near Kona but is rarely a wash out. Winter months are a bit cooler in the evenings, so bring a jacket. The farm is located in the Kona Coffee Belt at about 1200 feet above sea level. The elevation provides a comfortable retreat from the hotter beach temperatures.</p>
