<p>With an inviting heated pool and deck on the sand near its contemporary structures, and a tranquil location a few minutes’ drive from the beach, this bright, airy villa duo offers beach house vibes, minus the busy sun-baked scene.</p>
<p>Situated on an 18-acre lot some four kilometers outside Carvalhal village, the property does laid-back luxury right. Two sleekly furnished living areas extend under the main villa’s high-pitched wood ceiling, one set up for cozier TV and fireside times, the other a minimalist modern entertainment space combining the kitchen, bar, dining and sitting rooms. Glass sliders around the house, in common areas and bedrooms, open to wood deck spaces that in turn open to an unspoiled country lot, and there’s a barbecue for outdoor cooking.</p>

<p>Half a dozen bedrooms in the main house are styled to be equally sleek and spare. Two king bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with showers (one with an in-bedroom soaking tub). Three identical rooms have pairs of twins, and one is a bunk room ideal for the kids. The four rooms with single beds share two bathrooms. </p>
<p>Inside the private annex, a kitchenette adjoins the lounge space, and there’s a bedroom for two with an en-suite bathroom.</p>

<p>This home is located only four kilometers from Carvalhal and double that to the beaches of Comporta. Beachgoers love Carvalhal’s sands for their free-and-easy vibe compared to the beaches of Comporta and Melides. Carvalhal town is one of seven towns in the the Herdade de Comporta, a zone of rice paddies and the wetlands of the Sado Nature Reserve. Dune-backed and flanked by rice paddies, Carvalhal's family-friendly beach also has a well-loved traditional waterfront restaurant, and there are beach loungers and umbrellas available for a fee. Nearby Pego Beach is a remote-feeling, four-kilometer stretch of golden sand surrounded by a pine forest, with a destination restaurant for those in the know. Sal Restaurant is a family-run domain of grilled fish and freshly caught seafood. Dolphins jump in the waters offshore, and the waves make the entire region a surfing hotspot for pros and beginners alike, well-served by surf schools and local guiding companies.</p>
<p>Nearby Comporta (about 10 minutes north) has become a favorite playground of global nomads who’ve ridden in on the coattails of fashion designers, international architects, entrepreneurial urbanites, and modern art collectors. Comporta is well loved for its easygoing elegance and trendy artisanal boutiques, lively galleries and handful of cute cafes. And Melides, also nearby, has become a favorite of design-conscious shoppers who delight in the burgeoning selection of galleries, workshops, and carefully curated boutiques. This mostly unspoiled region remains undeniably beautiful despite its popularity—a green landscape of vineyards and cork oak fields, rice paddies and groves of glinting olive and orange trees. <p>A sweep through this gallery-quality, one-bedroom nest in a 1920s-era courtyard building in central Milan reveals an easy elegance. The residence’s classic architecture is what first greets the eye, a space of original ceilings, floors and doors brought firmly into the modern design era by sleek Italian designer pieces and bold contemporary art.</p>
<p>The owner is an architect, and the property’s furnishings reveal an affinity for design and color across the ages. Italian vintage furnishings like the Maralunga sofa by Vico Magistretti for Cassina (1973), stainless steel chairs by Willy Rizzo (1970), and a wall wardrobe by Osvado Borsani (1960) are illuminated by standout vintage sconces dating from the mid-century through the 1980s. Parks are nearby, and the streets here are good for getting around via bike. The owners recommend a morning stroll through the park and residential neighborhood to reach the Piazza San Babila in about 15 minutes.</p>

<p>A one-of-a-kind beachfront property, offering vast Mediterranean views and direct beach access, this striking penthouse occupies the top floor of The Edge in Estepona, on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. The building was created by Rafael de La-Hoz architects of Madrid, a multigenerational, international firm, that has been designing urban spaces since 1920.</p>

<p>Designed by CO-LAB Design Office architects with softly elegant interiors created in collaboration with Annabell Kutucu, this five-bedroom, jungle-enclosed villa features cascading terraces, rooms with outdoor showers secluded among the leaves, an amoeba pool curving through the garden, and a rooftop dining and bar deck overlooking a thick sea of green, just across the street from Tulum Beach.</p>
<p>Walkable to the community’s buzzy restaurants, bars and clubs, this treehouse residence offers a true oasis, where every space is wrapped in a leafy jungle cloak, and gallery-quality interiors are alive with bespoke, locally-made artworks, handicrafts, and textiles. <p>The nearby town of Gaiole in Chianti is one of the Chianti Classico wine country’s three major towns, home to the largest winery of the region, Brolio Castle. Credited with creating the Chianti wine “formula” in 1872, the winery is open to visits, along with many other historic cellars and tasting rooms also featuring Chianti Classico bottles made from the local San Giovesse grapes. Gaiole is a market town, ringed by castles, fortified abbeys and countryside panoramas, with the Castello di Brolio owned by the noted vintners, the Ricasoli family, since the 12th century. </p>
<p>The town is set along one of Italy’s favorite bike routes and hosts the annual Eroica bike race, held on the <em>strada bianchi</em>, or gravel roads, a race ridden on vintage bikes by cyclists wearing vintage gear. Walkers/hikers can walk sections of these gravel roads into the countryside as well, passing local vineyards and olive groves. Those seeking local shopping adventures should head into the locally celebrated ceramic shops and studios, found both in town and in nearby Rampini.</p>
<p>Neighboring Radda is another Chianti Classico league town (the third being Castellina). Known for its ancient architecture, the medieval village and castle at its heart were established as the wine region’s headquarters in the mid 1200s. Repeatedly threatened by warring factions, the town boasts castles and fortifications today that have now become storied villas and wine residences. Thick stone walls enclose scenic squares, flowering courtyard gardens and pretty viewpoints along cobbled streets cut through with a handful of photogenic tunnels where small restaurants and cafes fill the arching alcoves.</p>

<p>It’s expansive U-shaped design reaching to embrace the Pacific, this large coastal pavilion stands as a contemporary interpretation of traditional palapa architecture designed by Carlos Ehlert. At the heart of the 6,500-square-foot house, a 17-meter, open air, synthetic palm-thatched roof floats overhead, naturally cooling the vast living room and its infinity pool, its chef’s kitchen, granite prep island and bar. The dining area seats eight, and the adjacent family room was created for hangouts over a good book or board game, or a nap in the hammock-hung private pergola next to it.</p>
<p>Ancient meets contemporary in the villa’s interior design by Diego Olivero, with walls finished in locally sourced flagstone and traditional Chukum Mayan plaster. Floors are volcanic Morlon stone and the home showcases custom pigmented cement tiles, artisanal brick, and ceramic lighting created by regional artisans. The property’s toiletries are handmade locally, too, using essential oils.</p>
<p>Floor-to-ceiling louvered doors blur the lines between indoors and out, and two rooftop terraces take in Pacific panoramas for miles. Lush landscaping adds that enviable tropical vacation accent, and teak furnishings add to the style.</p>

The town's harbor is the world's second largest natural harbor, with boat trips, tours and excursions to Isla del Re all departing from its shores. The town’s many plazas are lined with sidewalk cafes and taverns, and lunch at the landmark fish market, the Mercat des Peix, is a must for tapas and pinxtos created from the day’s fresh catch.</p>
<p>One relic of British rule in Menorca, the local distillery, Gin Xoriguer, is still going strong, and it's open for visits and tastings in its front-of-the-house shop in the historic center. Sightseers and shoppers should wander the city's upper level, connected to its must-see marina and harbor area by pretty, winding streets. Restaurant and bars join fishing boats and ferries along the waterfront, and the internationally renowned Hauser &amp; Wirth Gallery has an outpost in Mahón’s harbor area. The contemporary art center occupies the Isla del Rey, with an outdoor sculpture garden, walking trail and on-site fine dining restaurant. Access to the gallery is via a shuttle boat.</p>
<p>History buffs will want to slip inside the town's neoclassical cathedral dating from the 18th century, or head to the Fortaleza de Mola, a 19th-century stone fortress just outside of the town center. There are no beaches in Mahón, though several outside the city are easy to reach by car. The neighboring village of Es Castell offers a small, sunny harbor backed by craggy white cliffs and a waterfront restaurant/cafe. The Es Grau Beach is 15 minutes away, with Sa Mesquida Beach another 15 minutes drive, both located on the island's northern coast</p>

<p>A stately home at the heart of Mahón on the isle of Menorca, this timeless property offers authenticity and elegance, with antique furnishings, historical woodworking, a generous and homey kitchen, traditional tile floors, sunlit patios on both levels, and a grand central staircase honed from native stone.</p>

<h2 id="glassroofedwalledcabininafairytaledutchforest">Glass Roofed &amp; Walled Cabin in a Fairytale Dutch Forest</h2>
<p>With its glass roof and walls of windows, this greenhouse-inspired modern cabin in the woods stands as a serene natural escape at the heart of a private fairytale forest. Spanning 120 square meters, the cabin is constructed across multiple split levels, its interior clad in oak, with a black steel kitchen at its heart and a cozy elevated living room warmed by a contemporary suspended wood stove. The home’s entrance doubles as a game room, and the glass-enclosed kitchen opens to two terrace spaces, one overlooking a private forest garden and natural swimming pond alive with irises.</p>
<p>Bedrooms were designed for two, each with a double bed and bathroom with a shower. The property has a pool table for indoor fun, and there’s a projector and large screen TV for snuggling up with a movie.</p>
<p>Outdoors, the natural pond covers 10 meters with a lava-stone helophyte filter and yellow irises as water purifiers. The house backs up to an estate property where deer roam, and the private forest garden is enclosed, reached down a small road on the edge of the village of Gorssel.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Located on the edge of Gorssel, a small village surrounded by forest and heath, the property was created for forest immersion and enjoying the magical wooded surroundings. Gorssel is home to the Museum MORE, the largest Dutch museum for modern realism, and several small shops, studios and restaurants. Walkers and bikers can wander the Gorsselse Heide, southeast of the village, a nature reserve with multiple routes through the heath and woods. Small farmsteads, castles and small historic villages dot the landscape in this region, the province of Gelderland, with the Ijssel River running through Gorssel. The larger cities of Deventer and Zutphen are nearby, historic Hanseatic cities, both on the River Ijssel, with striking architecture, and lively food, beverage and art scenes. Zutphen is one of the nation’s oldest cities, home to over 500 local and national monuments.</p>
