<p>A beautiful retreat on a remote Scottish peninsula, this coastal home on a 25-acre private woodland can be rented independently for up to six guests or combined with <a href="https://boutique-homes.com/property/borradill-cottage">a neighboring cottage</a> for larger groups.</p>
<p>Contemplate vast views across Loch Sunart and dial back daily life’s stresses in favor of foraging, swimming, forest bathing, boating, or biking right out the door. Due to its uniquely remote location, the home offers fixed stays of four or seven nights. (Four-night stays are available on request.)</p>
<p>Timbered inside and out, the house offers a generous living area, breathtaking views over Loch Sunart to the Isles of Carna, Morvern and Mull, and a Scandi-meets-Scotland design theme throughout, created by its interior-designer owner’s Mookerjee Design Studio. A woodburning stove and fire pit add to the cozy styling, and the house sits deep in a lush, green woodland with a temperate rainforest adjacent, home to soaring oak trees said to be more than 400 years old.</p>
<p>Furnishings are refined, yet homey and comfortable, and there’s an outdoor deck framing the two bedrooms and TV room that can double up as sleep space for six. A spacious farm-style kitchen is fitted with a long dining table for easy entertaining, and the home offers multiple warm nooks for gaming, crafting, reading and resting.</p>

<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Set on a remote coastal peninsula, the house offers year-round adventure. The beautiful woodland is a mix of oak, birch, rowan, larch and spruce, crossed by streams and dotted with ponds and rugged viewpoints overlooking the sea loch. It is home to owls and otters, pine martens and eagles, and foragers will find chanterelles and berries galore. There’s a forest camp in the woods for kids (think rope swings, stick shelters, and magical mossy clearings), and a five-minute walk leads into an ancient Atlantic temperate rainforest with 500-year-old oaks, elemental lichen, and a burn crossed by a raging waterfall and pool for a chilly dip.</p>
<p>Within a 15-minute walk from the door (or a five-minute drive), there are more organized adventures to be had. Sea trekking on Loch Sunart, a special Marine Protected Zone, allows you to discover the rich life underwater and the remote rocky outcrops and isolated beaches. Loch Sunart is one of Scotland’s deepest lochs, part of the Argyll Hope Spot, and there's plenty to do within it, including diving for scallops to cook on the fire back home, or watching for dolphins, seals, porpoises and flapper skates. Ardnamurchan boat charters is a 10-minute walk from the house, and offers both guided and independent rentals. Guided open-water swimming, cycling (both road and electric), kayaking and canoeing are also available. And there’s a highly regarded Adelphi whisky distillery nearby at Ardnamurchan, known for its single malt.</p>

The Bend Shed is a modern urban cabin in the heart of Bend, Oregon, designed by the architect owner as a family retreat.

<h2 id="architectdesignedurbanretreat">Architect-Designed Urban Retreat</h2>
<p>With its abundance of wood inside and out, its classic woodburning stove, and a picnic-ready patio with a fire pit, this architect-designed urban retreat manages to be at once cabin-like and contemporary. It cuts an angular figure brightened by oversized panes of glass and sleekly sensible modular furnishings like its galley kitchen with a prep island and its mezzanine workspace.</p>
<p>Three bedrooms are tucked under its sharply sloping roof, one king downstairs and two more sleep spaces upstairs adjacent to a living area and work-from-home desk. The rooms share a downstairs bath, and the main floor’s open-plan kitchen/dining/living area opens to the patio and yard, equipped with a picnic table and seating around a fire pit, ensuring indoor-outdoor living.</p>
<p>The property is accessed down a private alley to a driveway entry. </p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>This cabin is located at the heart of Bend, Oregon, in a quiet residential area that's easy walking distance from downtown and Bend’s lively Galveston and Newport Avenues. The city is one of America's fastest-growing, with its influx of outdoor adventure types who come for its year-round sports options and sunny, high-desert climate. The small city is set on the Deschutes River east of Oregon’s famed Cascade Mountains, with ski resorts, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, mountaineering, and a wealth of craft breweries, youthful art outlets, restaurants, and local food markets.</p>
<p>The river winds through Bend until it reaches a dam and pools at Mirror Pond, and it includes a whitewater park, set-ins for easy floating, paddling, and SUP fun, with rental and instruction options. Miles of hiking and biking trails cross through the city, and there’s even an extinct volcano within the city limits, with trails leading up the Pilot Butte. Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is about 20 miles west of the city on another volcano, this one a “stratovolcano” in the Cascade Range, offering 12 lifts and more than 4,300 skiable acres that are open from November to May. Mountain bikers consider Bend a year-round destination, with hundreds of well-maintained trails of all skill levels running along the river, through local and natural/state parks and national forest areas, as well as Smith Rock and Mt. Bachelor, and in the steeps of the Cascades, too. </p>
<p>Craft breweries and coffee houses were arguably born in the PNW, and Bend offers dozens to choose from, along with a vibrant local wine scene, overflowing farmers’ markets and a dedicated, farm-to-table sustainable local dining scene.</p>

<p>A detached, private guest house in the outdoorsy mecca of Bend, Oregon, this modern cabin was created by its architect owner, Christopher Phillips of Analogous Architecture of Seattle. The standalone shed strikes the classic cabin high notes, yet it’s decidedly urban, with an artful architectural footprint and a can’t-beat-it location for combining city living with outdoor recreation.</p>

Named for the Corsican word meaning both “little plot of land” and “a little crazy,” this barn is anything but. Striking views spin 360 degrees from wide windows and multiple decks, showcasing the Isle of Beauty’s breathtakingly wild, rugged landscape. The barn’s interiors feature vintage and original design pieces, including the rosewood Ole Wansher dining table that dates back to the 1960s, and a buffet from the 17th century. Pendant lamps, books, artworks and plants dress up the practically designed, open-plan common spaces, and a pool overlooks the distant mountain silhouettes and the maquis, the island’s native shrubbery, on the surrounding slopes. Sliding doors and oversized windows opening onto elevated terraces give the home a little bit of a treehouse vibe and blur the boundaries between indoors and out. Wild creeks spill down from the mountains as you make your way around the Bruzzi loop, and there’s a beautiful red sand beach among the more classic white sands, the color a unique phenomenon that results from a concentration of single cell organisms. Snorkeling the peninsula’s bays is possible. Another strenuous hike climbs to the notable Uomo di Cagna a rocky pinnacle with a human likeness. Kitesurfers should head to the Bay of Figari, or seek out a guide on Balistra Beach, where there’s also a sweet little beer and burger shack. If the wind is right, Muchju Biancu Beach is idyllic for kite surfers, but regardless of the elements, it is among southern Corsica’s prettiest beaches and rarely crowded, given its off-the-beaten path access down a narrow path, a quick drive from the home. <h2 id="escapetothecountry">Escape to the Country</h2>
<p>Two hours from New York City, this refined estate home is a Covid-era renovation project undertaken by a father-daughter team. It stands as a well-appointed heirloom residence with nods to fine European country estate living. Named for family ancestors, the home’s interiors have been lovingly curated by soon-to-be-architect daughter Deirdre McMullen, favoring a rich blend of antiques and modern furnishings. Deep gem-toned furnishings and richly patterned wallpapers complement the exposed stones, deeply stained timbers, and wood and slate floors.</p>
<p>The property’s timeless barn stands fairytale red and soaring, complementing the dashing estate that’s surrounded by lovingly manicured grounds, a vast saltwater swimming pool, and multiple outdoor patios and terraces.</p>
<p>This stately estate stands as a handsome haven for much sought-after down time—a place to relax in beautiful gardens, lounge around the sun-splashed saltwater swimming pool, work out along the on-site walking/jogging trails, or play a match on the tennis court across the street. With a bright, breezy kitchen, inviting library with plush seating, and sweetly serene bedrooms, the home was created for family lazing, cooking, reclining and reading—generally creating memories within the property’s well-appointed embrace.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Harwinton itself offers small town living in a rural area of gentle hills, tall forests, lakes and ponds. The town is part of Litchfield County, a green oasis with nature preserves for hiking, charming cafes and antique shops, the latter a source for many of the home's treasures. The area’s architecture dates mostly from the 18th to the early 20th century, and Harwinton’s annual country fair is one of the region’s oldest, long appreciated for its agricultural background. Local farms in town offer apple and pumpkin picking, and there's a local dairy farm, Thorncrest Farm (20 minutes) that offers fresh milk and chocolates and even lets you pet the bovines. In addition to farming, local industry has produced supplies such as pitchforks, whetstones and barrels, as well as clocks, lumber, bricks, tinware and cutlery. A local cider mill, Hogan's, became an internet sensation recently and the town offers wonderfully curated antique shops as well. Another must visit local favorite is Arethusa, a fancy ice cream shop, cafe and restaurant.</p>
<p>There’s a local land trust of 170 acres, meaning lots of open space for hiking and wildlife observation. Foliage hunters love the area in autumn, and there are year-round recreation opportunities in nearby Black Rock State Park, including swimming, hiking and exploring the steeply wooded ledges covered in pine, hemlock and oak. Skiers can hit the slopes in wintertime at Sundown or Mohawk Mountain (both 20 to 30 minutes away), and daytrippers love to visit New Preston, a beautiful town near a waterfall with a strong "shop local" ethos of interesting boutiques. The property owners have created a list of their favorite destinations in the area.</p>
